Actually, that role and imagery went to a guy named "Charon" in Greek mythology.
Lethe and Mnemnosyne were subsidiaries of the underworld's main river Styx, which souls od the deceased had to cross to get to Elysion (sounds familiar?).
Both Lethe (river of forgetting) and Mnemnosyne (river of remembrance) had to be drank from (in that order) as a ritual of cleansing of sorts.

If I wanted to nitpick, I'd state that Mnemnosyne is not actually the polar opposite of Lethe, as in: It's not actually about remembering every detail of one's past life, but generally assumed to be more of the concept Plato knows as anamnesis, but in this case more universal.
But the chapter gets close enough.
