If there had ever been a place for it to be hinted, it was there, but it was clear Kubo wanted nothing to do with it so I dropped it.
Watched the next arc a few years later and dropped it after two episodes because it was so bad.

All I remember from it is Orihime whining about not seeing herself reflected in his eyes, being useless and begging him for help even when he was all but dead and making him go full Hollow. And this is coming from someone who really liked her until the HM arc, it just shat all over her character and she never recovered for me. I liked her a lot more when she was funny klutz with a lot of depth and empathy, and when she could do more than just Kurosaki-kuning. Really lost potential right there, and same goes for Hinata.

You should have gone there from the very start. I personally wouldn't call it garbage, but the second half felt really rushed and somewhat convoluted, like the author knew where he wanted to go with the story but didn't know how to get there.
