despite being marginally better than Black Clover, Mashle is still incredibly uninspired and quite possibly one of the dullest franchises in the history of manga franchises. Seriously each episode following the boy non-wizard and his pals from Easton Magic Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of shading, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Komoto vetoed the idea of ONE writing the series; he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable promotion for Weekly Shonen Jump. The Mashle series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Hunter x Hunter series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character exercised, the author wrote instead that the character "pumped iron."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Komoto's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Mashle by the same Yuki Tabata. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Mashle at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Black Clover." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Mashle" you are, in fact, trained to read Black Clover.

The manga is just not beginning to take advantage of the world building put in place early on so theres easily hundreds of chapters more that can be done. It's a soulless and uninspired shonen manga that comes off like many of the imitators of One Piece and Naruto from the early 2000s that quickly got cancelled. From the story to the artwork to the character archetypes, there is absolutely nothing unique or even genuinely enjoyable about this series at all. It's basically just the gay petri dish baby of Naruto and Fairy Tail. The only reason it's still around and lasted as long is because it filled the void left by Naruto when it ended. And even then its sales are dwindling.

It pretty obvious BC is power fantasy for losers Asta even as a LN tier harem
