Kumo desu ga, Nani ka does a good job of describing someone who games the system with some luck. Though I've heard people call her lucky, which is subjective I guess.
Kuro no Mao is misery porn, but you get your MC who doesn't have the world handed to him and he's stuck with what he was given at that start more or less (which is middle tier) and he has to rely on his patchy earth knowledge to leverage it in which he fails often. I guess the fairy is a freebie.

I think I got a fun way to get the MC to be powerful without cheat skills.
Imagine a magic system based on the four elements, each with its own proficiency. For example someone might be a Lv20 Fire mage, but this says nothing on his ability to deal with Water or Air or Earth magic.
Once you reach certain levels, you're able to take new spells. E.g. Lv2 Fire gives you Ember, Lv10 Air gives you Windstorm, etc.

Higher level = better magic, so the inworld common sense dictates it's better to specialize on one element instead of waste time with 2+ of them. For example, if you're a Lv10 Fire mage your attack will be the same no matter if you're also Lv0 or Lv9 Air - you're going to use Fireball and that's it.

Here comes the MC, who's clueless on the common sense of that world. Unlike everyone else he actually trains multiple forms of magic equally. So while people around him are 30/0/0/0 he's a 10/10/10/10. He outputs way less damage per turn than someone who specialized, but certain powerful spells require you to have proficiency in two or more elements.
>Electric attack: Lv10 Air + Lv10 Fire
>Volcano: Lv20 Fire + Lv15 Earth
>etc.
In theory everyone could get those spells, but they don't because it would need you to not specialize on a single element, and that goes against the world's common sense.

In a temperate-ish zone you'd probably use a lot of water magic and then some fire magic. It's possible the amount of fire magic required for that is trivial, so it hardly counts as training it.
However, let's say it takes a year to train a single level in a certain magic. You can spend 10 years training Fire to Lv10 or use the same 10 years to train Fire and Water to Lv5.
Since for story purposes 10 years is a fucking long time it then I guess training time could be coupled with other requirements, such as the environment speeding/slowing training for certain elements. MC's insight could be to be able to change that environment in a relatively easy way, due to modern knowledge.

How far did you get? I do understand people who are iffy on it, especially how slowly the relationship seems to progress and the fact that a lot of the characters come across as deeply flawed people, but I feel it really does all come together. The characters are all pretty interesting and layered and defy your first impressions of them, which is pretty much the theme of the novel. Camilla is a bullheaded idiot at times, but the kind you end up rooting for anyways.

there's some standouts and they're not all isekai's per say, with chinese ones you gotta get used to certain themes coming up again and again though, the chinese like their metaphors and turns of phrase, and they come up again and again, which is why people meme about phrases like "You're courting death!" and yanno, while japanese characters tend to be overly moral and forgiving, the chinese ones tend to go too far the other way and cultivators are just trying to murder each other for minor slights and then get even angier that someone dared defend themselves.

The class culture stuff is one of the most interesting things about these novels though, and is usually where the good comedy comes from too. The cultivation power system stops being interesting once you know how it works and the characters themselves sure as fuck aren't worth reading for. Chinese social autism is the main attraction.

His story is also a lot more about adventuring than just being an OP harem collector.

MC is going to win in the end always, there's no chance of MC getting cucked (girls don't even look at anyone but the MC), tragedies are only reserved for prologues, there's not really anything internal to learn MC kinda got everything figured out. and though the antags aren't cartoon villains (just petty assholes) they aren't exactly nuance, there's never going to be a time where the MC accidentally kills the innocent, or the enemy he kills was the friend and family of someone he likes, or the people under his protection suddenly themselves become arrogant young masters because they know MC is going to protect them. Just the MC cultivating being the strongest being in the area and then moving on to the next one to do it again. MC has to work hard to get his victory but the victory is inevitable.
