My biggest irrational regret is not growing up in Japan. Entertainment of course plays these things up, but middle and high schools in Tokyo look like so much fun. Not sure about a schoolhouse in the boondocks.

In Japanese (and really most Asian languages that I've come to familiarize myself with), the language you use when talking to another person is really important. Don't use a formal tone when talking to a friend you hang out with everyday, shit like that.
So, say in English, when someone who is supposed to be your classmate refers to you as "Mr./Mrs." of course you'll feel weirded out.
Just saying that "respect" in this context may be different from the one you're referring to.

That's not really unique to Asia, though. The rules might be a bit more strict, but you probably talk in a different way to your friends compared to if you met your favorite author.

I didn't mean to imply that, just that Asian languages almost always have specific words you're meant to use and straying from the social norm is especially glaring.
I've been to different schools in North America where you could refer to your teacher and Professors by their first name if you'd like, but doing that elsewhere either notifies everyone else you're extremely close to them and is straight up taboo if you're not.

Sure, whatever floats their bubble. We're just shown the girls who want to befriend her but are too scared, though we're never explicitly shown whether or not she's popular among the guys. Then again, if the rest of Japanese media I consumed is to be believed, probably they all prefer girls like Tatsun anyway.
