The idea of it being permanent was retconned (or brushed off) in Super. Now, only Potara with a Supreme Kai is permanent (unless wished apart by dragonballs), while Potara without a Supreme Kai only lasts for an hour (i.e. Vegito is now temporary). While there was no consensus, my impression WAS that Potara was stronger but permanent, and Fusion Dance was not as strong but temporary. Both had unique pros and cons with their own stakes and limitations for the characters and battles.
Now they're basically the same thing, and the differences are more about the plot convenience of having the ear rings available, as opposed to any larger stakes.

Because Krillin surprisingly gave 18 and her brother a chance. While scared to death at how powerful they were initially, having incapacitate the entire gang rather effortlessly, he came around to seeing them as in a sense actual people.
Krillin took the extra mile during that arc. Nowhere was he an insulting asshole like Vegeta (who completely disregarded the Androids as people) and he floats heavily against reasoning that they have to die for the greater good (Cell’s plans for perfection sure would be useless had Krillin allowed them destroyed). Against what felt like better judgement (and arguably sorta is at the time), Krillin ultimately decided the Androids have a right to live.
…That leaves a pretty good impression for 18 to see Krillin’s positives there. It firmly sticks when again when things look uncertain, he used a wish from Shenron to remove the bombs inside the Androids so they can live without that fear of death looming over them. Not everyone is keen on the idea of powerful strangers they barely know and have fought against to roam freely but Krillin showed a lot of faith in them to do what they want without troubles. Hell, he wanted them to be humans again just to give them a fresh start.
No wonder why 18 will always see Krillin as awesome.

For two reasons that most people don't actually understand or think about.
1.The fusion partners can train independently and gain strength on their own. They can then fuse together and become even stronger.
The potaro fusion is permanentl. They become one person and all strength gained will be linear unlike the fusion dance which will be a major multiplicative boost.
2.The skills of the two fusion characters will grow exponentially and they will think up new abilities and become evenbetter fighters on their own. How can anyone think of Broly as anything other than "weakling"? He did nothing of value. He beat a regular SSB? So did the last 3 antagonists.
At the end of the day, Jiren was an opponent who forced Goku and Vegeta to surpass their limits SEVERAL times, first with SSB Kaioken x20 when the last time Goku used it was x10 at best; then with what at the time was known as "limit break", which is pic related, and even then that was only enough to match Jiren, not completely surpass him like it happens with all villains; then with SSB Evolution, Vegeta achieving a completely new form, still not enough; and finally MUI, which even that was knocked down TWICE by Jiren. Never before had we seen an antagonist being unfazed by a completely new asspull form or technique, overpowering them one after the other.
Meanwhile Broly didn't force anything out of Goku and Vegeta, neither broke his limits and he was just added to the list of cucks who has been completely overpowered by a Fusion, alongside Super Buu and Janemba. List which Zamasu, a villain from 2 arcs before Broly, who also fought a SSB Fusion, is not part of. Pathetic.
