not as funny as the last few chapters, but definitely heartwarming. I really wish Hato-sensei would stop writing chapters that seem like they're a setup to end the series though, especially now that it's actually ranking well.

Whatever the editor told him to do worked out wonderfully.
That vague spirit threat is like the volcano in Saiki Kusuo. The author set it up a hundred chapters ahead of time so he could flip the switch and give the story closure whenever he felt like it.

sales are barely above most of the shit that's gotten axed lately, so it seems likely that it's editor pushing, but it's hard to tell since sales are ~10 chapters behind the ranking until volume 2 comes out
Jump wouldn't push something if there isn't at least some interest behind it. Otherwise you'd get stuff like Jimoto-ga Japan, Zipman, or Squid8 near the top.
Also keep in mind that One Piece and Haikyuu were absent this week, so its ranking should be more around the middle of the pack.
Lets not forget that digital sales aren't tracked, so who knows what's going on there (I think the only thing we do know is that CSM does very well digital-wise, and Yuuna might also).

I have a good feeling that the Volume 2 sales will be better. Not great, but definitely improved.
Mitama used to have a spirit line and maybe some really bad shit went down when he finally exorcised them all at once, so he's making sure not to repeat that same mistake with Rena

I wouldn't be surprised. The manga had a pretty rocky start so it's not really shocking that the first volume sold poorly, especially since it's a gag series
The first few chapters weren't that great so try not to judge it too fast.
It gets significantly better after the first 5 chapters or so.
Chapter 4 was the first chapter to get me to smile at a joke.
The Zobiro chapter was the one that finally got me to laugh.

Because he was afraid of them and his attempts failed. Then he sort of gave up on exorcising the batch and focused only on the dangerous ones for a while, and became genuine friends.

I know that it means absolutely nothing for a multitude of reasons (fake numbers, western audience, still very shit compared to the rest) but Mitama's numbers on Manga Plus have been significantly improving for a couple of weeks now. It went from being stuck at 7k to suddenly 11k (which are "supposedly" individual IPs).

At those numbers, any number of factors could have brought in an audience. Maybe even just word ofm outh.
No wonder I like the humor in Mitama more. The first couple chapters of Samon-kun were just him being malicious to Tesshi for no good reason other than being triggered by good people.
Of the current crop of comedies, Miitama's probably the least mean spirited. Everybody's an idiot, but they're all very friendly idiots.
I wonder if it'd have more success if they tried to market it more towards a female audience, it is so comfy and kinda shoujo-like at times desu

Meanwhile Yozakura can't afford to be nice due to the whole spy action premise, and at the very end of the spectrum you have everyone in Mashle who are all fucking sociopaths.
Can any shoujofags out there tell me if this is really like a shoujo manga? The art style makes it come off as one, but I'm not familiar enough with the cliches to tell if it's actually parodying one or not.
Writing-wise it's pretty typical for a gag manga for either gender, if it really was more shoujo then Yuko would definitely be treated more serious and there'd be more female characters than just the two.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun taught me that they usually feature a perfect Gary Stu hero and an ultra bland, lovestruck heroine. Neither Mitama nor Rena Haze fit that description in the slightest.
I guess Soya kind of fits the asshole love rival role.
Are either of Ta or Pi supposed to be female? I noticed 1 went into the men's bathhouse with Mitama and the other went with Rena and Yuko. I know little kids can go in either, but I was wondering if they split up for a reason
I think I always assumed that Ta was male and Pi was female, but not for any reason
Shoujo's not all romance, that's just the most prominent genre the same way battle manga dominates shonen.

Rena calls them Ta-bu and Pi-chan in the raws, so is correct.
No kidding? I never realized that. I hope that the author doesn't give them some super tragic backstory. Just them being child spirits leads me to believe it's impossible for it to not be sad, but I'm not mentally prepared for the feels.
I can't wait to learn more about Zobiro's past. Body even seemed pretty interested in him in particular.

Yeah, the almost destined dark arc that deals with the sources of all the spirits has a great chance of being rough emotionally.

I'm that user and I've read a fair amount of shoujos and obviously I'm not talking about romance series, but some chapters especially lately definitely do give me that vibe at times desu.
I bet the editor told Pigeon to stop making his feMC so gloomy. Re-reading the first few chapter is sort of depressing compared to what we get nowadays
Yuko's cause of death: getting truck-kun'd on her way to confessing to her crush
Well it was easier for her character to stop feeling so gloomy once she started becoming friends with her spirits rather than ignoring them all or being slightly afraid. She went from having basically no friends and a mom who's never home to an entire family of spirits and some actual human companions.
Spirits and ghosts intertwine, so they may or may not have a past as humans.
Dying Will Mode Mitama isn't afraid of some measly spirit line. He could've just shot them
At the very least the main spirits with speaking roles will have a past. We've some of Mr. Commentary's past and Yuko seems to remember what she was like when she was alive.
it's funny how edgy this fan art is compared to the actual series. It seems more like something you'd get out of Jujutsu Kaisen
The first chapter did sort of promise horror imagery alongside all the comedy, instead of all the ghosts always being cutesy. It wasn't until probably Zobiro's chapter where that was entirely given up on.
Her shonen skillset is fairly edgy on paper, but it's hard to take seriously when she used it to beat Mitama in a game of baseball.

I don't know if they'll ever give up Soya not having spirit sense. Without it, his only gag is being an extremely good friend to Miitama. That's a rich vein, but not rich enough for a heavily recurring character.
It should be a joke for the very end of the series. Bonus points if it establishes that that's what they had always looked like all along and Rena's just hallucinating all those cute chibi forms

honestly, I think all of the non-swearing fits the "wholesome" image the manga shoots for better than a fully accurate translation
It would be funnier if Mitama and the rest of the cast got fired up over all these trivial things in the TL
I don't think the wholesomeness would be affected very much because they'd still be wonderful people on the inside
While not as funny as the previous two chapters, this was pretty wholesome so it’s all good in my book. And man I hope this series lives, probably the one new series I enjoy the most and I would hate to see it be killed off early.

bad rankings don't matter if a series sells well, but good rankings can absolutely save a series that doesn't have good sales
Good rankings can override bad sales. A series staying near the middle or top of the ToC means that the editors have no intention of axing the series prematurely no matter how low or stagnant the sales are.

it's hard to call UU yet, but it seems like it's doing well. I really hope so because it's by far my favourite series from the new batch. I'm not a huge fan of Agravity, but it's at least better than Zipman and Witch Guardian
She's cute in a calm down to earth kind of way, not that overly loud kira kira shit that other series tend to have. But she totally can if she wants to be.
Good rankings imply that people buy the magazine to read the series, even if they don't buy the volumes. So it's still sort of sales.

I hope either Yuko gets more of a core than liking Miitama or the romantic implications with Rena get dropped. If her entire character's based around being with somebody who's gonna end up with somebody else, that's kinda sad.

I think as Mitama starts to get more accustomed to the spirits we might eventually get a proper romance arc between him and Yuko. Mitama and Rena are pretty cute together, but it would suck if the character whose "gimmick" is being in love with Mitama gets cucked
