I was thinking of dropping the manga and giving the anime a try to see if I prefer it as the manga after only 5 volumes I'm finding a struggle, when I realized it was by the same guy who did 20th century boys I became even more skeptical that it was worth my time.

You're exactly correct. Urasawa has good starting ideas, but spoil them by milking them to death and not knowing how to end them correctly.

I gave it a good 20 eps but it was a snoozefest which is shame considering I typically enjoy the mystery/psychological thriller genre

I realize this is a rec thread in disguise, but even so, the only 10/10 manga I've ever read and re-read after re-read is still a 10/10 is YKK.

Its turned into a long-as-fuck epic about 5yr old Erica and tiny toddler Alita being hustled around Mars while incredibly boring new characters do mysterious things concerning who's running Mars that its almost impossible to give a fuck about.

Don't bother. One Piece used to be my #1 manga back in the day but I've slowly grown detached from it. I finally gave up when Big Mom chased Luffy around a prison for hours. Maybe I'll return to it when the manga ends.

I now prefer much shorter, fulfilling stories like Fire Punch and Chainsaw Man.

Enies Lobby is in Water 7 saga. It's alright but nowhere close to the heights of what came before. Impel Down is great.

Maybe I have some kind of nostalgia for enies lobby, I don't know, but I think that "I want to live!" Robin scene is easily among the most iconic scenes in the series, and luffy vs lucci is probably the most iconic fight in OP (although luffy's powerups kinda came out of nowhere).

As you can see, these are soft-covers, so the spine will crease if you open it up all the way to see some of the spreads, which are beautiful. This is a bit of a shame, although I don't regret getting them. Was 10/10 for me, especially the last arc.

Reverie was literally jump cuts of fan service, exposition and endgame teasing. I honestly think Punk Hazard has a stronger case because it has a structure, an order of events and a narrative. you know like how stories are. Reverie had potential but it got snuffed.

Some parts of it are great, especially Karma and Resurrection. Other parts are not great by any measure, like Civil War. It's uneven.

I love how this is the only argument for Monster than anyone can ever come up with. Honestly most of my disdain is for Tenma being easily one of the worst MCs of all time. Everything about him is so fucking lame, retarded and poorly written. I could nitpick specifics but then I'd be rambling for several paragraphs like some autist. Almost everything involving Tenma and the main story was shit. A couple of the sideplots were great and the final arc was pretty decent but I'd have to give it a 5/10 overall. The way the characters make randomly correct assumptions and just happen to jump to conclusions with no indication that they should be able to do so for the sole purpose of moving the plot forward makes even Death Note look well written in comparison.

DO nitpick specifics. I would love to know what's wrong with Tenma as a fictional character.

More seriously, I do think that everything from Hole-kun on is a bit weak compared to what had come before, but I think that's just because the manga was pure kino for so long that the ending is *only great*. I also think that it's better than everything before Blue Night, honestly. Yes, the manga has some flaws, but I don't really think 10/10 manga has to be literally flawless. That's an unattainable ideal. Dorohedoro basically started as 9/10, went to 11/10, then dropped back down to 9/10, and that averages out to a 10/10 for me.

I just don't understand why people prefer Homunculus to Ichi the Killer. There is not a single wasted moment in Ichi, and the characters are all great.

I didn't want to list two works by the same author, but I like Ichi the Killer just as much and do consider it a 10/10 too.

Though I think the whole subplot with the new kid taking Ichi's place was kinda weak.

Lucci was a mindless human weapon, he isn't supposed to have a personality. Spandam was the main villain of water 7 - Enemies Lobby.

Tenma is urasawa self insert, is also what he thinks is a good protagonist, if you read his works he always self insert except in pluto

I'm around 10 chapters before finishing. My only problem is how Kaiman is supposed to be the protagonist but is absent for 2/3 of the story (aikawa doesn't count) and he returns as a copy in the ending.
