Well they seemed to make a pseudo-sequel to EoE with 3.0 as far as setting goes. Taking place in a post third impact world where a resseructed NERV is still trying to achieve a perfect instrumentality. If we ever got a second season to NGE it would definitely use a lot of what 3.0 has brought, like new characters and the mechanized angels.

That's not even all. Imagine going into Rebuild without watching NGE prior. None of the base lore and scifi mechanics ever get explained or explored and neither do character backgrounds and histories.
Ritsuko's mother for example doesn't exist in Rebuild.

I was super impressed with his Godzilla film because of how PERFECT it was and it felt like Anno hadn't lost his touch, but these last two movies seem like the only thing they do anymore is jump more and more sharks?
