It's a fucking zombie story, those only end in two ways, No ending or a "And thats how they all died" endings I can't think of a single one where the zombie virus was defeated and society began to rebuild endings outside of the parody movie, Shaun of the dead
I prefer to think of the series as being broken up into two parts that I treat more or less as independent works. The first part ends with graduation, which marked a satisfying thematic closure and works as a complete story on its own. The second part is everything that's happened since.

It's a real one. Things begin to head down the path of suffering after chapter 30 though, so if that's not your thing then I'd say try at least reading to chapter 30 and then stop if you don't like where it's headed after that.
Basically everything after the S1 adaption is crap anyways.
