Well, I was trying to use Jisho but stupidly thought 心 was a separate kanji. I’m not use to handwriting

Use the google translate handwriting function

The author is lazy so the hiatus is longer than normal.

This is why you typeset first, then only redraw the bare minimum you have to. This is also why some people use such thick outlines on their text.

Use waifu 2x to enlarge it. If you can't read it then, try writing it into google translate to see what kanji suggestions it comes up with.

Don't get me started on how much I hate typesetting.

How do you anons deal with scanlating a series no one gives a shit about? I'm thinking of translating classic Shoujo manga and I can already see the average views being less than 1k.

Saw a random chapter online where the gay childhood friend tries to kill who he thinks is his main love rival and accidentally slashes the MC's arm instead. Then he's horrified at what he's done and the chapter ends with him crying.

You'll probably be in luck. In my experience downsizing to something readable usually helps hide defects on that size of scan.

Based on other comments I've seen the best way to build popularity is to have regular, consistent releases spaced at least a few days apart.

What do you do when some text is handwritten in a chapter and it's so bad you can't make out the kanji? Just find a kanji that might be identical and makes sense in context and roll with it?

Weekends and the time of day seem to big factors. If you’re in burgerland try releasing your chapter in the morning. If you post it too late most people will miss it. I post consistently every 5/7 days and have seen views stay at >1k with growth over the month to 2k. Also check the tags for the manga are accurate of the content because, at least the MD community is pretty pissy about that. If your really concerned about it check popular manga aggregate sites since you’ll see view you get from outside of the MD box.

I’be actually been really curious about this and kinda want to do some rudimentary stats about it

Is it possible to make money off translating / typesetting stuff without getting in trouble? I've been doing stuff for a while now for free but I've reached a point in my life where I actually need to start making money and screw being a corporate wageslave with zero time.

Scanlators are typically poor. I typically only use scans I find on raw sites or ask people on Yea Forums if anyone owns volume x of whatever series or issue y of whichever magazine.

While I'm not exactly a poorfag I much prefer to just buy tanks. I don't like buying a mag for 1-2 series I might like in it. Why pay for the pie when you only want a slice kind of situation.

Tanks are much more cost effective. Only that doesn't work in my case, since the mangaka is lucky to release a new volume in 2 years time.

Do regular 2-3 days spread for first few chapters, then space it to 5-7 days. First burst will give you initial readers, then later some longetivity for words of mouth to spread. Also post the manga on reddit if they somehow haven't.

If you post a series not many people are reading doesn't it make extremely obvious that it's just the scanlator shilling it?

If you take active part in discussions on other series, I doubt most people would notice.

I remember trying just posting here for the first few chapters. I'm kind of amazed we're at 10k views per chapter on MD now. I guess a hot milf offering the MC a footjob didn't really hurt either.

Cope. Subscription photo editors and faggy internet legislation has decimated western scanlation. There are culturally significant manga that finished a decade ago that remain untranslated or undertranslated.

If you're having trouble with handwritten kanji you should at least learn to recognize what radicals they are built from and then use for example jisho.org and its radical tool to find them.

Depends on context, usually something like "heave-ho" or "hupp", but may also be something like "alright" if it's post-action.

It's really horrible to know Japanese and be aware of the fact that almost all translations are made by retards like who picked up minimal Japanese for the sole purpose of translation and don't actually understand what they are translating on anything but the absolute surface level of course making it inevitable that their translations suck. Learn Japanese.
Is at least what I'd like to tell you if raw manga were as easily available as English translated ones but (I assume) all scanlation groups keep the raws locked up because they want to profit from doing the manga. All fucking disgusting.

You have to have a lot of love for the series.
It would probably feel even worse if every time you release a chapter the same people come back and say they're going to stop reading again.

Most of them keep raws locked up with the excuse that Japanese speakers can just buy the manga and they don't want to support "piracy", but in reality they just hide raws because they don't want anyone to have a point of comparison.

You can rip it yourself with hakuneko I believe. Also, the original image files show up in chrome's dev tools and can be saved from there.
There's some dude who can rip a higher quality version with a secret script though.
