Based on how much fun some of the shit in UQ Holder (immortals, parallel realities) is I'm not sure if some of the stuff was originally in the plan for Negima. For a more precise timeline I'm not sure if after the comfy slice of life arc that this was going to jump straight into the endgame rescue Nagi arc because its 5 months to graduation.

To be honest I'm not sure if how much content makes sense, as I'm not sure if the plot is constrained by the timeline of them graduating and entering high school. (Unless you think the story can continue without Negi as their teacher, or the class happens to stay together and he happens to be their teacher again)

Of all the cut stuff that I think could be done in a shortish timeframe and wouldn't take an arc or even mini one, this is the one I'm the most frustrated about.

The class staying together is not that unlikely. They're the most magical class in the entire school and the headmaster is Konoka's grandfather. I could see them being kept together solely so all the highly magical people are contained in one place.

UQ Holder is one of those timelines fleshed out in detail to my understanding. I guess what I was thinking was if Negima was never "axed/cut short" and thus UQ Holder never made, if there'd ever be an arc/contrived reason for them to visit the "UQ Holder" time line.

Kept stuff the same for the most part, just properly fleshed and ideally a break then a time skip to when the take on the Lifemaker in the good end. With this UQ could have completely been about the no Asuna line without as many Negima call backs.

I don't know what I'd change about the ending besides at least some answers to Negi's mom. It was never intended to be ended this early and there's a variety of foreshadowing and plot threads people would've loved to have seen.

Did anybody expect that Chisame would win the Negi bowl (albeit retroactively according to UQ Holder)? I assumed Asuna would've and I remember the theorycrafting before UQ Holder for Yue based on the focus on her in the last chapters, even gymnast girl based on calling Nagi father as a joke.

Forked Asuna probably lives as long as Shiori does, but UQ Asuna's gonna age and die of natural causes long before Iced Asuna wakes up again.

It's okay, it's main problem is it's trying to please both old Negima fans and its new fans and it can't do both. Also the MC is a gary-sue and I personally just want more Negima.

You won't get a consistent answer to this. There are Negimafags who like it (which is where I stand), Negimafags who hate and resent it, and UQonly fags who like it just fine without ever having touched Negima. I personally like it and actually like the overall cast more than Negima's, but again you'll find people who think the UQ cast is worse. MC is in Ken's words a mix of Nagi and Kotarou, so if you want another Negi you won't get that.

The problem is Asuna has lived for over 100 years, they're from the same royal family but it's unlikely she's directly related to Arika. Asuna may have been born before Arika was and thus they might have different parents.

She was a pretty strong contender even in Negima, so that's not exactly surprising. I mean, she essentially took over the main girl role after they went to the magic world, and was the only girl with him when he learned Magia Ereba and was instrumental in his decision to learn it. That's some pretty heavy stuff to add to the other teases.

It's kinda inconsistent. In UQ they mention that the demon world is probably on inverse Venus, but given that demonfolk are not THAT uncommon in Negima, you'd think they'd know more about where all these demons are coming from.

That's not too difficult all told, the ideas weren't bad the execution was just rushed and flawed. You mainly need to show those other incidents hinted at, explain what happened to Negi's mother(it'd be fairly easy to say she died in the battle with the Lifemaker which resulted in Nagi being possessed), flesh out Negi's original plan(which presumably didn't call for the sealing of Asuna), then show what happened to change it to one that required sealing Asuna(e.g. discover Fate's estimate of ten years was reduced to one by the near success at destroying the magic world), then show the final battle with the Lifemaker.

It's fine. As others have said, the change in tone makes it "love or hate" for most people, depending on what you liked about Negima.

I'm generally kinda lukewarm on it. The slower release cycle and the plot pacing makes it feel like it's not really going anywhere, though that might just be relative to how fast Negima moved toward the end. I can't exactly recall how I felt about pacing during the Festival arc or the early stages of the Magic World arc in Negima when things were not moving as quickly.

Ultimately I think my biggest personal issues with UQ Holder are:

1. Akamatsu has gotten lazy with his art style, and things have gotten less interesting to look at. Though the fights have finally been stepping back up to the quality of the later Negima battles.
2. I've gotten a bit bored with happy-go-lucky "it'll all work out, trust me!" protagonists. Negi was interesting to watch because he was driven and had real skill and smarts, not because he had all these secret abilities he conveniently learns right when he needs them.
3. Negima was fun because most of it seemed like a cool place to be. The Mahora festival, the Magic World, all of them were places I wanted to know more about, and Akamatsu was very good with his use of CG in his landscapes to add lots of detail. UQ has a darker tone and IMO, doesn't really look like a very fun place to be unless you're wealthy or powerful.

I enjoy it, takes some time to ramp up but Negima is one hell of a hard act to follow and its even worse when UQ Holder has to compete on similar genres.
I'm mad that her pactio was offscreen as far as I recall. Also, big can of worms: I wasn't sure if it counts as Negi NTR-ing her from Kotarou.

Thanks for all the dumps OP, getting to read this for the first time alongside not only other newcomers but all these anons rereading it was a great time. Getting to hear about everyone's nostalgia for the first time they read Negima and the memories that stayed with them all this time was really fun and pretty interesting. The passion that so many of you have for this series honestly warms my heart, it's just such a good thing to see. You should definitely take a long and well-deserved break after this one OP, but I'll be eagerly waiting for whatever manga you decide to storytime next. I'm fine with not going straight to UQ Holder considering it's not done yet, would make for kind of a limp anti-climax for a storytime. Honestly the mixed reception I've seen for it on these threads has made me more intrigued to read it, but I should probably take a break from the Negiverse from now to read something else. Maybe I'll take up that one user's recommendation from a few threads back and check out Houshin Engi.

One last thing though, I was actually expecting the ending to be way worse considering how badly people were talking it up since the beginning of this whole thing. Like yeah it definitely wasn't the best, it's clear that there was a ton more stuff planned that just kinda got skipped, but I still feel somewhat satisfied with the resolution we got. Probably just because I know it's not the real ending and there's still more to go, but after everything I heard I was expecting it to be something like Negi just taking a shit on a desk for 5 chapters straight or something.

Either way, it's been a fun time. Hope to see you all again in whatever future dumps may come to pass.

Natsumi chasing after Kotaro could've been enjoyable to get more details on possibly.
I wonder if Kotaro was ever supposed to get his own harem, or just Natsumi only. We never saw much of Fate's harem after he starting lusting for Negi. Shenaniegans with Fate like cockblocking the thirsty 3A girls were pretty fun, I can't think of many examples where a sizable antagonist joins the crew and fun (triple date incident) like that, off the top of my head only Medaka box comes to mind.

I disagree with this. What he did was streamline his process so the workload of a weekly series wasn't so heavy, working on Negima weekly was a lot of work with the amount of detail it had, a lot of the later chapters would often be shorter than the typical 18 pages. That's why early UQ doesn't have as much screentones and lots of blacks. Notice how when it moved to monthly, he started shading things with screentones the same way he did Negima. I believe he stated in an interview he purposely changed up his style a bit for UQ as well.

There's also the fact he switched to drawing digitally, which is going to subtly look different from traditional no matter what.

The problem with Touta is that he tries to be naive like Negi, but his naivete feels like we're watching a moving plot device, where he's only there to make he girls shine. Negi didn't feel that way, and he felt easier to have sympathy for.

In my defense, I had never read Negima before, and I wasn't spoiled much during these threads. Lots of spoilery hints and properly spoilered spoilers, though.

I'd be down for Biscuit Hammer, it's one of my favorites and I've been meaning to reread it one of these days. Plus it's a hell of a lot shorter than those other two.

I always suspected Madoka(black haired cheerleader) and Chizuru were also going to make pactios with him as well. With Mei also having a crush on him.

The character art and screentoning was traditional, only the backgrounds and props were CG.

I'm actually glad Ken didn't forgot about the 9th spell and integrated it as a plot point in Negima. 5D chess level foreshadowing

I know Ken does work quite a bit to make Touta interesting, but it doesnt help he´s a standard shonen MC and his other characterization comes from this series. The most interesting part of him on my opinion is his connection with Eva and even that got pretty messy.
I do like his straightforwardness in a no battle related setting though

And so, the dump concludes. Great work OP. This was one hell of a nostalgia trip and I have to give you some sincere thanks. I haven't really had much of a 'community' for Negima, as it feels like it is entirely dead basically every single place on the internet. The closest thing are the once a month UQ Holder threads, but I'm not a fan of that and they usually die pretty fast anyway.

Negima will always hold a special place in my heart and it's my all time favorite manga, even despite the flaws. There's never since been a manga that quite grabbed me like it, be it the complex world building with the beautiful magic system with more care put into it with consistency maintained, than any other anime I've seen. The characters were just great as well and the manga managed to balance a surprisingly large cast quite well in most cases. In part because of that, Negima's also the series that made me get into writing and I ever wrote something for, which developed into a hobby I've loved for years.

It's a shame it had to end this way, that it'll never ever get a faithful and full length anime, and that the community has become nigh non-existent. But, these last several weeks on Yea Forums have been the best time I've had in a while and it was a blast to go through Negima again, especially drawing in some new readers too. Can't believe it's been so long since it ended...

I think the general impression that his art has gotten simpler comes from the fact that main cast is smaller. Sure there are plenty of characters but, with Negima there was always a bigger standard with the 30~ students, that were also plenty fun and colorful characters even if just a mix of cliches.

I agree, Negima was KINO. It was a shame about the rushed ending, and that it'll likely never get an anime adaptation.

Can we appreciate that Negi had a harem of like 25 girls and none of them were related to him, not even NBR?
Maybe technically Asuna, but she's his several times over great-aunt, and by the time were learn that for real she has more or less fallen from the running.

Shaman King is one of those shows I watched a lot of as a kid but never got around to finishing, and even if I did the anime stops following the manga at a certain point anyway, so getting to finally see how that plays out all the way through would be a fun way to finally close the book on something left open from my childhood. I wouldn't say no to Medaka Box either, I've been wanting some context for Kumagawa for years now but I just haven't gotten around to it.

I'd have to double check to be certain, but I'm fairly sure most of the chapters were 18 pages. The cost was the constant hiatuses. From what I recall of his blog at the time, it appeared to take him about 9 days to do a standard 18 page chapter. When he wasn't going to be able to make a deadline or would barely make it, the next chapter carried a hiatus notice and might be a page or two shorter.

Then for UQ Holder he managed to stay weekly without hiatus, but at the cost of dropping to 16 pages a chapter, going to full digital drawing, and simplifying the art a bit.

Kaede is si competent and MVP that she can travel space just by willing it.

Kenichi, that would pretty great too. I remember that while the series did drag during some of the later parts it had a lot of funny parts and I do like training in Shonen. Funnily enough Kenichi was the next series that I started reading after I finished Negima.

And just like you see in the panel, Yue and Nodoka does looks too young compared to Yuna and Paru even though they are at the same age.

If this only a joke or usual teasing, she would not bring up the topic about them being Negi's partners or even proposed to become one as well.

Long, long ago, I started reading the official release of Negima. I don't remember why, I don't remember when, but I began buying the official volumes at 11 dollars a piece, as they came out. I got up to volume 19 (which turned out to be my favorite), and then real life stuff happened and I couldn't continue it. I tried, but the best I managed was to get to volume 21. Then more real life stuff happened, and is happening, to the point where I've become an english teacher in Japan, doing my best to encourage the kids to try new things, explore their hobbies, and be unique. Also English, but that's more like a means to an end rather than the point. Negima was always a source of inspiration for me, getting to this point, and I always regretted not knowing what really happened at the end, and how it happened. Your threads changed all that, and at a time when I've been feeling kind of drained. Thank you OP, for taking the time and effort to do all this. It's been a great read and a great time, and I feel my energy again. Boys and Girls be ambitious.

It only kinda sucks that I'm not sure I can openly recommend Negima to any of my students, because they might get the totally wrong idea about it due to the way it starts.

Asakura is the announcer, with Chamo providing color commentary. Ayaka enters with a racy swimsuit with absolutely no qualms about it. Because...
...the winner of the contest is the entrant whose swimsuit manages to get the biggest "healthy" reaction out of Negi. There are 50 entrants, and Asuna, Konoka, and Setsuna can't help but notice the crowd. And then the situation.
Paru apparently gets/forces Nodoka and Yue to enter, because she can't be wrong: this will totally let them 'get' Negi. Yue disagrees; this is totally wrong, isn't it? Konoka thinks it looks gun, and immediately decides to enter. And decides to make Setsuna enter, too.
Three more entrants appear on stage, but they decide to take a more 'direct' approach. The other entrants see this, and see themselves missing their chance, so they start to crowd him, too. Asuna can see all the bad places this is going.
With Setsuna backing her, she breaks into the fray, forcing all the girls back with her harisen. "Seriously, you're all going way too far with your antics, here! I'm not gonna allow it!" She indicates towards Negi with her harisen, and holds it a little too close to his nose...
Asakura: "Ohhh~! Who would have thought we'd see things turn out THIS way? Or maybe I should say, it's something we all totally saw coming!" Asuna takes her exit, with Negi.
Negi thanks Asuna for saving him, and she laments that the class let themselves get carried away again. She asks him if he's alright, but he's already asleep. "Honestly..."
Konoka can't help but thing that it looks like Asuna won the prize, this year. Setsuna agrees.

Now I'll miss Negima all over again

Did you read the chart? It has a bunch of new things added since it was last updated. A "Christmas Incident" involving Sakurako, a "The Paru-sama Incident" involving Haruna, a "Grandfather Incident" involving Ayaka, a "Family Incident" involving Kaede, a "Valentine Incident" involving Chisame, Akira, Nodoka, and either Makie or Ku Fei, a "Tsukuyomi-san Stalking Incident" involving Setsuna, plus various other notes that reveal new things about the girls, or hint at Negi learning things about them.

That's what Negi thought it was saying at first but the advice was to go to her if he's in trouble.

You can resist The Lifemaker's possession for a time. Nagi likely had the willpower to still control himself somewhat and saved the village. He obviously didn't stick around, due to being a ticking timebomb who could lose control at any moment and would kill everyone.

Negi the know-it-all autist tried to become the world's savior through an overly complicated plan (which actually ins't that much better than Ialda's), but everything goes to shit because him and in the end he didn't manage to save anyone. Eventually, the world becomes a post-apocalyptic shithole much worse than before. It's like a classic Geek tragedy. So in order to truly save it, you need a new MC that is completely opposite to him.

Negima should have ended after the festival arc, there was no need for Namek.

But Touta isn't Nagi either. The guy didn't even think. Touta is book smart and knows his shit. He doesn't need to carry a magic-for-dummies book with him all the time to cast simple spells. He just doesn't overthink stuffs to find the best solution which will last for eternity like Negi. He goes for the most simple and straightforward solution to solve the problem in the present and will do it again if problems arise later (since he has enough time).
Simply put, he doesn't ignore problems like Nagi nor complicate them like Negi.
