personally i just try to make mine as similar to myself as possible, because its how i'd like to see us the most.

It's weird people would do that. My SI's gender matches mine, and I hate to think that someone would assume I'm a weirdo just lying on the Internet.

Mine is as close to a 2D translation of myself as possible. I would struggle to insert into something that didn't look exactly like me personally, defeating the purpose of a SI. It makes me feel more warm and fuzzy to see literally me in the picture.

Mine is just me if I was an anime. That's all. PoV is nice but I prefer to see us together for some reason. Makes it more personal too me I guess. PoV anyone could just take and be gross about it.

well i mean, its up to you how accurate you want to be. i dont think theres anything wrong with being 90% to your likeness and then shaving off the parts that you dont like. its ultimately what you are the most comforable with.

Depends on what it is you want to alter, I guess. Like in my case I fucking hate my hair IRL, because it's a curly/wavy mess that makes me feel kinda gross. I prefer having it straight, but it only stays that way for like two weeks after a haircut, and I'm not getting a haircut every two weeks. So as far as my SI goes, I would prefer people draw me with straight hair even though it's curly most of the time.

I hadn't requested in the other threads because I assumed no one would draw such a vague request, honestly, but this is perfect. I won't get into blogshit, but I really do appreciate this, it came at a good time. Now I want to put this picture up above my desk to look at when I get discouraged or distracted. I'll ganbarimasu for him.
I love the colors in the background, and the brushes you used, especially on the mountains. They're indistinct enough to blend in to the background, but the brush edge ensures you don't lose them in the haze. I also love that he still has his fashion sense in mind, even when harvesting clams in sub-freezing temperatures. He's gotta look good for the cameras, man. His clothes look nice and bulky with all the rumpled fabric, too. God, you even put in the gradient on the letters. This is all scrambled now but it's great attention to detail, is what I'm saying.
mentioned this, but I love seeing how people interpret his hair, I always struggle drawing it. Gives me new ideas. I like how you kind of bundled it into big vertical sections, I never thought of it that way. I might have to steal that from you sometime.

I get those feelings all the time, and I'm sorry had to deal with them, too. I can't make you feel better about it, but I will say that the receiver typically doesn't notice all the flaws and lack of effort that you find in it yourself. Even if you feel like your delivery is subpar, that doesn't mean the user will feel the same.

That's why you pick an artist that is familiar with your character. I browse skeb enough to read people's requests often to figure out how the website works, plus I actually read how the website works. Some artists are okay with links. Others prefer more simple requests without links so they set a minimum character limit when you type your requests. It really is up to the artist you choose. The only major problem with the website is that you won't be able to get a WIP, artists can freely ignore your want to be private by just posting it on a different platform, and sometimes prices can be ridiculous.

I might do it for the first time ever.

Last year's went great, but I'm perpetually unsure if I'll still be around here by then. Probably will end up participating either way though

Now this is certainly a surprise. Simple dresses are the best, especially when Irabu is wearing them. I'd given up on this request considering the weather's getting cooler, but I'm beyond happy to see it fulfilled despite that! I love the dress design you went for. The blue stripes and bows make for great accents, while still keeping the overall design simple, and the little pink flowers on his hat are a super cute touch. I do love his boots, so it's really nice to see him wearing those as well, and that area of leg between the dress and boots is to die for. Tried to doodle some waifus in this thread again. I have the skill level of about a second grader despite being in my twenties, but I want to try doing art every day, or at least once a week. Today, I doodled in my current "style," which is... not very impressive or good. It's little more than chicken scratch.

Next week I'm going to practice chibi bodies and anatomy, as well as trying to make what I draw actually look like the ref. I have a lot of work to do, but if I want to draw my own waifu, I have to work hard. I hope I can improve within the next few months.

Been thinking about doing the same if I've gotten significantly better by the next month or so. It wouldn't be (You)-worthy so I'd just dump it as some sort of grabbag towards the end of the thread

I've bought a cheap drawpad on a whim and hooked it up with Krita and I have to say practicing is sooooo much easier when you don't have to manually erase every single line you mess up, and when you can use layers to do sketches before commiting to the final lines, when you can paste the reference right next to your drawing etc. Can only recommend it if you feel like practice is getting dull

I've been thinking of getting a drawpad or some kind of table too, for some reason I have it in my head that it'll be easier to learn and draw that way but I'm not sure how true that is. Cute headshot!

I've started practicing drawing recently so I can draw my husbando too. I can't bring myself to deliver for anyone at the current quality, but I'll keep practicing and hopefully in the future. Don't feel bad about that, you just I assume haven't practiced it since about that time. Drawfags have just been working at it longer.
The issue with learning that way is that you end up leaning very hard on the conveniences of digital art, and it becomes a crutch more than a tool.

Thank you! I can say its way easier, for me at least. Granted I'm already well accquainted with image editing software so I already know my way around that.
I do feel like digital drawing artificially elevates the quality of a drawing (the coloring for example fakes a bit of depth), but I never really understood how I'm learing drawing "wrong" by making use of the convenience it provides. The strokes, techniques, the understanding of anatomy etc. that I gain in the process is still the same. Sorry if that isn't what you meant, thats at least what I've got from talking to others about it.

Most people I know are really good at criticizing but they can't make good renderings to save their lives. It will be different for me due to my Japanese knowledge.

I find having a keen eye is a good skill to have to a point. Dont go extreme on correcting flaws but dont become one of those "muh style" artists that ignore all their short comings.

Well I don't think most artists study anatomy that extensively. Do you need to be faimiliar with muscles like the spinalis capitis, subscapularis or pectoralis minor? Probably not.

Probably but the bigger issue for me is my shading and color theory, both of which suck. Composition only helps so much if that's lacking, plenty of artists make good stuff with a plain bg and nothing else in the frame.

Oh yeah, that's big too. Personally I don't have much problems with shading, especially since my structure and perspective are very solid (no pun intended). But picking colors that harmonize with one another is pretty difficult. That's probably when the "colored rough" comes in. Japanese artists actually color their sketch, since they can tel which colors work without committing themselves to a longer drawing.

This is the best reason to always keep tissues nearby.

Pengi-san! Those have got to be the most intense pretty lashes I've seen on him in a while, and that little curl on his hair framing his face is just as beautiful. Honestly the shape of that fringe is amazing. The shape at the back of his hair and the little bump to his round nose makes this a great balance of traits from the two styles of his manga. I love the little detail of the crease at the bottom of his nape, it really shows that you've been doing suit studies for these.

And for throwing it in as a bonus you really got the head and beak shape of an adelie just right, my hat's off to you for pulling this all off in one go.
