I read isekai for a fun or interesting narrative. If I want to learn about agriculture or government then I'll read western literature.

Isekai is just a narrative device. It's just fantasy with a setup that takes care of a few things that setup the story conveniently.
I don't understand why everybody is so buthurt about it's prevalence. It's like bootstrap in web development, it's bland if you don't do anything with it, but it's very useful and the possibility to go in a more unique direction isn't truly restricted if the author wanted to.
The problem of the glut of isekai doesn't come from the format being bad, it comes from the fact that it makes it very easy for any shitter to write one.
It takes care of so much of the writing that it means even the most talentless hack can string together a story.
Which is also true for web development and the frameworks available these days.
That doesn't mean that not using a framework makes you cool or that using one makes you bad.

Star Wars is a good example of this. it went from the peak of sci-fi to shifting into what's not called "future fantasy". since it's largely a more common fantasy story for it's time with light sabers replacing swords and the force replacing magic. sci-fi today has more exceptions that it explores technology or ideas we see in our future.

Other way around. In soft sci-fi (which is most sci-fi) the "science" is either magical or not directly focused on.
Hard sci-fi usually avoids but in as a result rarely leave itself much room to explore, which is why so much of hard sci-fi becomes social commentary.

Its never done well. Everyone most of the times has undying loyalty to mc. Merchants, clergy, peasantry or aristocracy never do anything. Mc is the one always bringing the revolutions, but never does the protagonist have to keep nation or state stable when new ideas rise and spread. They always treat kingdom building same as management of rescourses, but it's much more.

because isekai side-characters that aren't just over-glorified cheerleaders are rare in it of itself. To have a good romance you have to have a love interests people actually care about. Hard to do when 99% of them are harems, and the few that are monogamous tend not to devolve into the romantic elements to avoid drama. Not to mention it's rarely the priority of the series which usually is all about how great the MC is (romance are about couples but almost all isekai are about the MC exclusively)

Because good romance inherently requires both the boy and the girl to be well-developed (or at least relatable) characters. Many isekai series only focus on wish fulfillment - the male is written minimally in order to facilitate self-insertion, and the female is written more like an object to be possessed (more focus on her looks or her waifu traits than her actual personality).

Let's put it in this way - if you can remove one half of the pair and still write a good story with the other, your characters are probably well-developed enough to have a good romance. Tell me what isekais fit that bill.

It all depends on how clever the MC is. Shizuko is a mere high school girl so there's no real temptation of ambition in the first place because her setting doesn't allow her to uplift herself through her own strength and must be done through others. She also has the luxury of bringing along some very useful books and had recent training throughout most of her life as an agricultural student that's also geeky about the warring states period, it's extremely convenient for her to enlighten those around her while being restricted by her identity and personal limitations.

In Nobunaga no chef, Ken is much older than Shizuko, but because not only is he not a warring states nerd, but also a high cuisine chef, he takes a different approach to Nobunaga. He doesn't seek to change the status quo of technology beyond culinary means, nor does he give too many hints to Oda to change history. In fact he even tries his best to correct the course of his butterfly effect upon his arrival while still changing the bits that he values such as saving Oda's sister from perishing with Azai simply so the daughters can have a mother. Unlike Shizuko, Ken has not thought long and far about survival despite holding great power with future knowledge because he worries about affecting history and has qualms about it.

On the flip side you got someone like Liu Mang who goes further than Shizuko, and through the nature of his time travel and his conman excuses, ends up becoming Lu Bu's son in law and drastically changes history by saving Lu Bu at Xiaopei, forcing him to use his future knowledge to turn a dwindling force that should have been reduced to dust into a growing powerhouse. He knows the various characters are smarter than him outside of his future knowledge and treats them well like Shizuko, but because he's the little lord and also a man, he ends up up closer to the dynasty warriors than Shizuko, sharing brotherhood and camaraderie.

It's a Harry Potter fanfic where a D&D wizard gets isekai'd over to Hogwarts. There's a lot of DnD loophole abuse faggotry, both for comedy and plot, but I feel it's executed well.

Ah I don't mind the waifu-baiting in TNE that much. It never really feels like a harem thankfully. My biggest problem is how many times they go into other worlds after the academy. It's like the author really didn't know how he wanted the plot to progress after Cube and just kept throwing the characters into isekai after isekai, allowing them to keep the abilities gained in those sub-isekais in the "main" isekai world. I still really like it though. I like the characters and the overall setting even if it does feel a bit directionless later on.

The Tutorial is Too Hard's biggest problem for me, and why I didn't list it higher, is just how absurd MC's list of abilities becomes. He learns such an insane amount of largely pointless passive abilities and it just bogs everything down. All the shit with his clone and his baby dragon is kinda boring too. I like it, but it just feels too cluttered with needless things at times.

I'm only like 14 chapters in to LMS so I can't really judge it yet. I just think the MC is really bland at this stage and the side characters don't really offer much of interest yet either.

I'm glad you're checking out Overgeared, it really is great. The MC's development from a selfish and conniving loser who doesn't trust anyone to a noble king is really well done too. The transition happens gradually and doesn't ever feel like a switch was flipped on the MC's character.

Any dragon that expects to realistically fly will have wings that can be pierced by a longbow with proper arrows for the task (and even if not, if dragons exist then any settlement would stock a scorpion/ballista to deal with them). A normal grown human would need something like a 7m wingspan to fly, how large do you think a full-sized dragon would need? They really can't be very thick and tough if you want that thing to fly.

The aerodynamics of a plane and organic being are much different. Can you, for example, imagine plane just hovering above the earth? Now show me one example where a dragon couldn't do that or wasn't extremely manoeuvrable.

Actually, it's quite easy to imagine one. It is not easy to imagine one that would naturally evolve. And that's the real key. In our world, natural selection and random mutation have to account for the end result. A human can't easily evolve to have titanium bones despite the fact these would (arguably) be a massive upgrade, because there's no simple random mutation or sequence of these that would lead to this happening. In the same way, a blue whale couldn't easily gain the adaptations needed to fly because these would be ridiculously extreme and the part way stages of the evolution would likely be non-viable and non-beneficial, thus ended the process there.

In an isekai world, it is often shown that there is a creator god of some kind. This bypasses evolution, allowing creatures to take on forms which, although impossible to reach in our world, aren't impossible in theirs. A dragon could specifically be given things like a metallic sponge skeleton for maximum strength versus weight. They could use nanotubes, carbon fibres, kevlar skin, whatever, because they could have simply been given it to start with. Natural evolution only has authority over creatures that use it as a means to adapt.
