I like the show and its optimism. However there bettee be a good reason for astronauts not teaching their people science before they died. I know many died but on a secluded island they should know how to survive and teaching them stories of old manga they also had time to teach science.
However its possible they will explain it later which will tie things up neatly.

I'm surprised they even managed to build boats that survive in the open sea. Just the fact all their names are geology based means the stories do hold info. Or that they know how to extract ink but seemingly "lost" a language. Byakuya wasn't even an "official" astronaut and everyone else died b4 kids reached a proper age to get educated. There still might be other factors, but it doesn't concern me as much.
