I think for myself it was a bit of both. I remember watching it as a really little kid on adult swim sometime before ‘05. When I got into high school back in ‘12 I desperately searched for a friend group and I picked the weebs because “surely it couldn’t be hard to fit in with them.” Googled “anime on adult swim with robots and guitars pre 2005”, watched it and instantly fell in love. No other anime has compared
