Fantastic movie. I loved the imagery and callbacks to TTGL, KLK, and DiTF. The Deus Ex Machina irony had my theatre exploding with laughter.
Trigger made quite the bold statement by modeling Galo after Kamina, and the movie didn't disappoint.

Just got back from subbed. My neighbor was a fatass girl and her friend laughing at literally every other piece of dialogue regardless of what it was.

People across the theater constantly shouting "KAMINA'S BACK" even though he's not but MUH AUTISM.

I had a lot of fun. The humor was good. Lio a best.
This is truly the first time I've ever had a bad theater experience with such obnoxious, loud people. I thought it couldn't seriously be possible that the horror stories I read about that weren't exaggerated. A girl and a guy in the row behind me were carrying full conversations during the movie, laughing loudly at everything, and the girl even answered her phone when it rang. I wanted to ask them if they weren't embarrassed of themselves for behaving that way, but they left the theater during the credits so I didn't have the chance.
I kind of wish the movie had been a cour long series instead, but it still works really well as something to settle in and have a blast with for a couple hours.

But fujos have nothing to fear. A lot of popular yaoiz ships are from mainstream shounen series with the guys having canon straight romance. If anything I think Trigger subverted the troupes here. People were expecting Galo x Aina because 1. they are male and female and 2. copies of Kamina and Yoko. But we got nothing out of it and instead Trigger decided to give the "romance" angle to the males MCs. So I am not sure if we could call Galolio fujobait or Galoaina straightbait or both since the both couples rely on existing fanservice moments.

I loved how even Galo said the Deus X Machina design was cringe too

Galio and Gaina both got equal parts of bait imo. There was clearly actual romantic tension between Galio and Aina during the skating scene, but it’s played as a joke when he drops her and fucks off. With Galo and Lio, he does the kiss thing and then it’s played off as a joke with Galo freaking out, and there is NEVER any romantic tension between the two characters. So I think it’s safe to say Gaina is probably what is “most likely” to happen, but man they are really testing the waters with the Galio shit.

Oh also the voice acting was fucking great. I really liked the cast. The post credits interviews were great too, a bunch of faggots didn't stay for them at my theater

Burnish are humongous assholes and could’ve burned some forests or abandoned towns or something but instead chose to attack the most highly populated city in the world. “We don’t kill without reason” is not a good enough handwave.

Speaking of handwaves, Kray did literally nothing wrong. Think about it. In Gurren Lagann, when Rossiu wanted to build an ark to transport a limited number of people to another planet for survival, he did this specifically KNOWING that there was an alternative way, that being Spiral Energy. He didn’t think Simon could pull it off, but that was his mistake; he played by logical rules in a world where defying logic is rewarded. Therefore Simon used his retard strength spiral energy to save the day. He’s done this time and time again throughout the series.

In Promare, this sort of bullshit doesn’t exist. It’s just a regular logical world that has people that spout fire in it, at least it is until the VERY END where Galo and Lio go full tengen toppa and cover the world in flames using their giant mech (that Fray couldn’t have possibly accounted for), and giving all of humanity flame shields (which Fray couldn’t have possibly accounted for).

Galo keeps asking him “can’t you use your science to fix earth instead of running away?”, and at the end of the movie, after everything is said and done, the answer to that was still “no.” The earth was fucked. There was nothing science could’ve done to save it, and it WASN’T science or information that saved it, but instead Galo and Lio creating a planet sized mech and punching the earth REALLY hard and covering it in flames while giving every organism in the planet a flame shield. From a logical viewpoint, which is the one Promare’s world operated in for 9/10ths of the movie, Fray genuinely was the savior of humanity.

One of my favorite aspects of Trigger’s projects is the relationship between the heroes and antagonists but I feel like they did Fray dirty here.

I was really surprised to hear no mention of Kakusei during the soundtrack portion of the roundtable, Lio's scenes stole the movie as far as I'm concerned.

The only reason he genocided burnish was because the earths core was gonna go boom tho. So instead of blowing up in 6 months it blows up in a year. Wow, very cool

Agreed on your last count. I enjoyed the movie a lot but it seemed that it was probably conceived as a series and likely would have been better that way, or otherwise they should have at least done a better job editing rather than cramming it all into 2 hours. It just seemed like a nonstop series of climaxes that just moved so fast that it was hard to really properly appreciate any of them or give them the due buildup. It's not as if they had no buildup at all and no impact, I just wish that scenes like Lio doing dragon install could have gone on a bit longer and developed more; I liked pretty much every scene but I'd gladly have one or two cut just to improve the film as a whole.

It was pretty kino, pretty much exactly what I was expecting going in. The ayylmao twist wasn't disappointing for me like klk or ditf because there wasn't really any sort of buildup/wordbuilding it let down aside from maybe it being something like the "embodiment of mankind's desires" trope based on all the initial burnish being frustrated in the first scene. Also my theater was surprisingly pleasant, nobody cheered or was annoying during the runtime although we all laughed a bit as some of the shit like deus x machina and the other shit. Also it was only like 1/4-1/3 full despite pretty much every seat being booked online in a smaller room, kinda odd but there were several showing it nearby.

Depends on the theater. Most of the time the front row is positioned too close or too low. Center of the middle to back rows are probably the best seats in most theaters

If Trigger wanted to they could easily do the romance route with Aina but decided not to for whatever reason. As for Lio, while I think he has more chemistry with Galo and fujos love him, I think if he was a girl this debate wouldn't happen in first place (we would have waifu wars instead). This open ending in the romance department benefited the fujos more unless Trigger decides for a continuation and develop Galo/Aina there.

The point was that Deus refused to use the Promaric engine AT THAT POINT. Kray decided that Deus's ethical hangup was getting in the way, so he eliminated him.

Like I said my theater was fine, sans the two dudes behind me in concessions going on about how you had to watch "Gurren Lagaaaaaaan" and being self professed Trigger superfans while at the same time going "This is the last thing they announced so I don't know what they're going to do next".

I enjoyed it a lot, but I didn't think it was amazing.

The CG is so close to being great, but it's just shy of getting there. The "limited framerate/no keyframe interpolation" shit is done way better then anything else i've seen... but it's still like that and it still would look better if it didn't. The animation is dynamic and there's a ton of shit moving at any given point... but there's still some static elements of models like people in cockpits that stands out that would be in motion had it been in 2d. On the flip side though I really dug all the almost psychdellic uses of geometric shapes, colors/lights, and negative space. A lot of sections were almost music-video esque.

I also just wish it was longer. I wouldn't say it's rushed but I think it would have benefitted from being like a 3 or 4 part OVA or a series of 12 episodes to really explore the world and characters more (I wanted to see more shit from Lio's perspective, more time for his and Galo's rivarly to build, more shit about Kray's motivitions, what the fuck promare are, etc), allow shit more time to breath and stuff to sink in, and for the action scenes to not be quite as insanely frantic and quick.

Would love to see it a second time to see how much my opinions change but I don't think there's more showings by me.

I saw the movie and it was alright.

The animation was god tier and pretty much eye candy.

As for everything else, the story was very rushed and as everyone said, would’ve worked better for a TV series which would make it shine as it went from a story about discrimination and oppression of the Burnish to TTGL 2.0 which the movie really liked to copy stuff from.

The characters were alright. Most of them were pretty forgettable barring Galo, Lio (Best Boy), Aina, Heris, Vulcan, and Kray. Like the other characters could be removed and not much would change.

Kray is probably the weakest character because there were good ideas for him but the presentation was horrible and was pretty much just pic related but successful.

I’d give it a 3/5

it wasn't that long, but the only thing I remember them talking about is how they used lines to show expression, how the colors turned out and one guy cried alot after seeing it.
it was ok

the CGI looked good, but the 3D camera movement in the setpieces are terrible, particularly in the opening and the big mecha battle. whoever handled the cinematography for the those scenes is a total rookie, they completely took out any of the tension and dynamicism you'd get from standard composition

you could remove heris and vulcan, and probably aina and the story would still work in much the same way

First is Galo-hen and Lio-hen. You can find them on the usual place with subs. They are chronologically set 3 days before the events in the movie. Then you watch the movie. Nothing more so far although it seems we will get something in the future but exactly what, is unconfirmed.

Saw the movie last night.

I'm kind of disappointed with the story. The movie is best defined as "fun" and there isn't a lot wrong with that but a lot of people are going to shit on it when it comes to BD because of how mediocre the story and script are.

Still enjoyed the shit out of it but it seems like it's definitely for a niche audience (Trigger/Gainax fans)

I enjoyed Promare I think one of my main disappoints about Trigger is that they were able to capture Gurren Lagann's absurdity and action but never its story.

Between trigger actually being able to release a blu ray to the states (gridman isn’t even here yet/KLK doesn’t have a complete edition and good luck finding Gurren Lagann) and aniplex literally fucking you in the ass, I’d say not anytime soon, and when it does come out, it’ll cost 80 bucks.

Hopefully it will be less complicated because it's literally just one single movie, rather than a multi-disc series.

Most theaters in general don't care about aligning the projection on the screen perfectly. I remember some regular movie I saw they lowered the aspect ratio black curtain things a tad too much so a part of the top of the film was projected on them.

It honestly wasn't anything worth sticking around for if you had to go, but it was amusing enough to hear about the process they had for coming up with the movie, at least.
