The reason why the threads are so dead is because the anime took too many liberties from the manga, bad as it was:
-removed Esther's from being the one to revive Hirumi and make it all Isaac/Taowu's fault who somehow possessed Hirumi on his own, gutting part of the reason why she felt guilt
-blatantly made Esther compliant in literally mindbreaking people/espers for the Coffin experiments, like she doesn't even give a shit
-made Isaac the "demon" himself who taught that they 10,031 memories death to create the perfect soul, and somehow make him speak angelspeak? Fucking how when he was stuck in a piece of paper for how long god knows when.
And gutting out the cameos people were expecting. This anime barely has anything to it other than those, and the anime just fuck itself over completely.

If they actually put effort into it and created an easier barrier of entry like they do with SAO (one of the biggest problems I noticed with Warner Bros and Index is the anime and LN feels so segregated and separate. Miki barely appears for our shit while SAO has a perfect and well managed unified mediamix) it would be good but they sadly don't. That's why Aniplex would be a good place for it to grow again especially with Part 3 coming.

What's the point in watching if nothing new is going to be shown? It's set in the past but before he makes any meaningful character development. Railgun is more about having fun characters do fun shit. Mikoto can't really develop thanks to later content - and for the same reasons major plot elements can't be influenced unless there's a plan for months down the line. The only purposes are to flesh out side characters and go on an adventure with someone you like. If you don't like Mikoto that's your problem.

Unfortunately that's the biggest problem with the level 5 spinoffs. Either they curbstomp the antagonist or they're the ones who get fucked up, there's no middle ground.
Astral Buddy is a bit better about it because we've seen Junko fail but rather than being a damsel in distress the plot lets her go deal with her shortcomings. Spinoffs about literal whos provide much more flexibility.

I wanted to see that from multiple angles.

I agree that there should be more struggling with opponents - having her blitz everything is a little annoying - and having her turn into a damsel is even worse - but the ingenuity and progression of the fights themselves can be fun at least. And despite what I said I do enjoy seeing her wreck some plebs; I just wish there was more middle ground. Tension from threat of loss isn't the only way to make something enjoyable.

It's really sad I'm too embarrassed to tell most people I know about this series -- it's helped me so much and I love it so much.

Even some kids' content gets written with more universal appeal, though more rarely because we don't have standards for what we sit kids in front of. Generally speaking an age rating just means that you won't (or shouldn't) appreciate it when you're younger, and a good author will make it so that you can appreciate it when you're older.

Yeah, and now imagine you're talking with your friend -- ask him what he's reading, he say's its this forty novel series he's been addicted to, you say something to the effect of it must be pretty good.
With light bantz you ask if its super autism to need forty, and poke at him a bit, he says you ought to give it a try --
Then you start reading about cross dressers, rollerskates, highways, electrocuting LGBTQ people, helicopters crashing -- all in just a couple pages -- and to top it off, with comments about how it's such a great series with so much depth from said person who handed it to you.

It's just a series full of stuff like that -- it's hard to ask people to take you seriously when you're inviting teasing and bantz by pulling up a cover with anime girls pressing their breasts against each other -- or beating up crossdressers.
On one hand I think it's a series that is more than good on a personal level; I think it's joy and point is great, as well as fun to read. But on the other hand, well, as has been said.
It's why I struggle with recommending and opening up about it with others, it feels like turbo autism.

Not explicitly, but it did have his demon nickname in the flashback, and that's a pretty pointless detail without that twist. Combined with the fact that the demon "mystery" still hasn't been followed up on in any way, it seems fairly likely that all the anime did was conveying the original idea more clearly.
