Except you can simply not have the compatibility for it. Depending on what type of swordstyle is based on, it could've been too slow for some or too fast for others. And reliance on the gimmick would be fatal the moment you'd meet a first demon slightly stronger who you couldn't defeat fast enough.

It's pretty possible that if another former pro swordsmen joined hunters, he could have a mastery of a style that was just way too differrent than Sun moveset and learning it from Scratch would be meaningless, so you applied breaths to your learned style and got one that made you perform way better than trying to learn something completely alien to you and be mediocre at it.

Simply being able to learn a breath style which is derived from the Sun (all styles except for Moon are derived from the Sun) shows that you have some compatibility. Pair that with being a top 3 Pillar, and some Sunny shenanigans happening couldn't be that far off.
Also, since all breathes are derived from the Sun, then that would mean there are some forms you'd be bad at, and some forms you'd be really good at. Since they probably have no record of the Sun forms, they could probably come up with some on their own by combining it with their form style. It's said in the manga that that was how the styles diverged from one another.
I get what you're trying to say, but since it's the progenitor, I doubt it'd be super difficult. Even if it was, they meet the requirements since they are marked, can achieve red blades somehow and are top tier Pillars.

What if the derived forms kept getting farther from the base as they were polished by the people and their successors who originally splintered it? The demon burning disappeared from all other styles but people substituted it with speed or control. Remember that it's unlikely that the new forms popped up suddenly and already finished. Water moveset from today could be totally differrent from the first historical version and with more improvements it kept getting further away from the first attempts. It's not really uncommon that the offshoot becomes something entirely new and has the root as a base in name only.

The trope is pretty much the standard "back in my days" and Yori and Koku have trouble passing their techniques on because the potential students literally can't even.
The entry barrier could've been way higher and hunters were way less common but it was expected that you'd be a one man army.

Also possible that this is wrong because we don't have a "mediocre sun user" for reference. The mark possibly wasn't a requirement because you'd somehow had to get it before learning the breath itself which is bullshit. Koku and Sunbro are really annyoing because they just float in a powerlevel uncertainty while Wani keeps gating the broader picture.

Some forms have had additions but they have largely stayed the same, such as Giyuu adding an 11th form to Water and Zenitsu adding a 7th form to Thunder and Mutilation adding a form for Mist.
I think Sun just encompassed everything, and some were good at probably speedy forms (going on to develop thunder) while some were good at direct attack forms (going on to develop flame, rock and wind).
Going back now, you're right in that "back in my day" trope is a thing, since Sengoku era Samurai are seen as the best of the best in general. It must be that Sun Breath is so fucked that in the process of learning it you end up having the mark anyhow. So the reason why nobody could pass it on was because they died of mark AIDS. I think that links with the fact that Tanjiro was the first to get mark by overusing Dance of the Fire God, which is, in my headcanon, a safer version of breath of the Sun.

The basis of the moves could be a swordstyle rom that era. And I doubt that with how much schools of whatever combat techniques there were, anyone would be trying to force them together.

I was talking about the differences in one offshoot style through the years. It's centuries m8. And I don't mean an addition of a brand new form rather than continuous small changes to the very basics. Fast moving current could have covered less area back then or the movements were more wasteful because it was used in a similar sun form that had a differrent dynamic. And as time passed it was finalized in the form we see now that is named same but the generational differrences were like comparing a dude on wooden skis with no edges and one stick to modern carbon autism. Both are called ski but there's hardly anything similar outside of maybe the shape.

My headcannon is that BOTS could've utilized the prana channelling of breathing techniques to make them leak into their swords and combined with spirit alchemy it created a desired effect.

Tanjiro's fight against Rui was quick in the manga coupled with his demise, the anime made sure to make it last. All of the Infinity Train has points in which the anime can expand a lot, pretty much all events Kyoujuro, Zenitsu and Nezuko were fighting offscreen.

Season 2 is under obligation to be shorter, it can only adapt the next two big arcs: Infinity Train and Red Light District without ending on a weird break, the Swordsmith Arc can't possibly happen with ufotable's prefered pace within a 26 episodes constraint.

I think Zenitsu, Inosuke, Tanjirou and Nezuko (for now) are safe since they are the main characters and main supporting characters. Tomioka dying is a definite possibility though.

Instead, it felt like it was reduced to comedy as Inosuke was instead having his usual sperging moment to have him come and fight him.

I don't really see that. Inosuke doesn't really have the super serious suave trashtalker side of him that Zenitsu does. He's a boisterous weirdo. The important part is that we get to see him get genuinely worked up and fighting for something a bit more than just for fighting's sake as well as being trully emotionally vulnerable, it's is the most "mature" Inosuke has been IMO just in a different way than Zenitsu.
