Old timey fantasy anime gets my dick rock hard. Some of my favorite aesthetics were in Majutsushi Orphen, Record of the Lodoss War, the old Berserk anime, and Escaflowne. Tell me about your favorites and maybe post some screenshots.

The ones you posted are great. Twelve Kingdoms is also one that I enjoy quite a bit. They really just dont make them like they used to.
How do we make fantasy great again?
More dragon quest isekai
I don’t have much too add besides agreeing that 80’s and 90’s fantasy was fucking badass. Pic related is a character design by Yoshitaka Amano for the Arslan Senki novels (by Yoshiki Tanaka, of LOGH fame). They made a series of OVAs based based on it in the 90’s, but they sadly never got finished. The art and the music are top tier 80’s fantasy aesthetic I would check it out if you havn’t yet.
Where could I check it out? Google only shows me the new 2016 one. I think the old one is on youtube but I know that tends to cut things up into a bunch of videos so I might want to look someplace else. Is there a more specific name for it?
Dragon Half and Gokudo, they weren't amazing shows but they had their charm.
Also Rayearth, if it counts.
If 12 kingdoms was used as the metric for modern isekai series instead of rubbish like SAO, the world would probably be a much better place. Pity that's not the case.
I'd argue Violinist of Hameln falls into this category as well.
>Dragon Half and Gokudo
>not amazing
Hell you talking about? Those were awesome, I had a lot of laught watching them.
>Old timey fantasy anime
I was just about to ask about this shit.
It always looks so nice in screenshots.
I recommend checking out the stuff I mentioned in the OP if you haven't seen it yet.
The whole thing is on youtube and the episodes aren’t cut up. Search “heroic legend of arslan OVA”.
Old fantasy? What the hell is that lmao
It's 2019, the fantasy genre is pretty much all isekai now. Enjoy your bland, yet overpowered MC and harem full of shallow, one dimensional characters.
Ok, cool
>It's 2019, the fantasy genre is pretty much all isekai now
This hurts because it's true.
its sad how anime devolved into isekai trash
i like isekai, but vast majority of the time pure fantasy just does it better
Thanks I now intend to.
isekai is just a plot device for shitty fantasy writers.
That show was nuts. They turned a comedy manga into some dark tragic shit.
bumping a good thread
Fantasy Light Novels used to be so much better.
Crest of the stars and banner of the stars were made between 1999 and 2005. I have recently watched this and was completely blow away. I have never felt so home sick to a place that does not exist like the Abh empire, must be my Cossack heritage. After watching it I realized that I have been watching trash anime all along.
Can older anons recommend some serious old Anime series? I've already see Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Less wish fullfillment, more adventure, more challenges/trials/tribulations. Don't make the MC the most important person in the whole world from the start, have some character growth if you want the dude to save the world
I do wonder if the Isekai fad crashes, will it take fantasy anime with it?
fantasy is a setting type, it's never going to die. If anything it should be fine since sci-fi seems to be mostly dead.
Have Japan get really into Wizardry and D&D again.
Call of Cthulhu is actually the most popular tabletop RPG over there right now, believe it or not.
Amano also did the art for the japanese releases of Moorcock's stuff.
>Spoiler
Yep, japs having shit taste as always
Love me some Elric.
I thought it was their tentacle fetish that boosted CoC's sales
Man I sure miss stuff like Slayers, Lodoss, Twelve Kingdoms, such great shows.
It really is shame there is not much their kind of fantasy shows any more. Next season there is Assasins Pride but it doesn't really hit the fantasy itch properly.
It's always annoying to follow serialized manga too not that I know many fantasy ones.
Atleast I still can trust few eroge/VN makers to deliver some good anime styled fantasy trips once in few years. And they aren't episodic either so one full package.
Really wish there were atlaest some recent fantasy VN adaptions that would actually have effort to put them but even half-assed oens have died. Firts Utwarerumonos anime was so great while second was abomination comapred to games.
It was amazing that they managed to condense such an epic story into a single movie and still keep everything perfectly paced and cinematically solid, often attempts at doing so, like Kamui no Ken, fail hard. But this one really worked out well as a direct transfer of the structure of a Greek epic into movie form. It reminds me of the British Excalibur movie from 1981. Windaria and Leda from around that time make for engaging fantasy romps as well, that have the advantage of being made prior to the solidifying of the genre's tropes in the 90s.
Lodoss is really good, but I've come to appreciate how Crystania ran in the complete opposite direction visually, and ended up with such breathtakingly dense and nuanced animation, albeit at the expense of the elaborately detailed art of Lodoss.
The last of its kind.
Ok, almost.
Isekai is just seasonal trash. Like magical highschools and battle harems before it. Like magical girlfriend before that. Don't confuse it with good anime.
More Urushihara Heavy Metal worship please.
sell me on it
isn't Goblin Slayer pretty much a Dungeon and Dragons campaing?.
If it could be less game-like, with less waifus and less MC is the only one that takes goblins seriously, it wouldn't be a bad fantasy series.
Why is it that fantasy anime that copy off of tabletop RPG campaign tropes are better than anime that take from modern JRPGS?
Cel animation
it doesn't have as good art tho
I mean, they didn't really bring more to the table beyond what Slayers already had. But they were good in their own right.
That said, Dragon Half as a show failed by virtue of only being two god damned episodes, it wouldn't have even remotely covered the manga material even if all four episodes got made. Damn shame.
No isekai
No video game mechanics
Harems are allowed I guess but max three girls
>stop the otaku pandering and ridiculous juvenile fanservice.
>use a different art style instead of the generic nu-anime look
The last decent fantasy series were this and Record of Grancrest. I guess Rokka no Yuusha kind of was, but it could've been a lot better. Aside from that it's just been an ocean of Isekai.
>Pic related
That's not needed, silly. Studios can reproduce that style using modern processes if they want to, as evidenced when they occasionally go retro for comedy or callback reasons.
There's more, e.g. bahamut or this.
have oshii direct it
I mean, I don't think anyone would could argue against me if I say that D&D settings are far more fleshed out than DQ settings.
Just give it to my hands
Record of Lodoss War was so perfect.
I wish there were translations for all the storys.
