FLCL is literally just an animation exhibition. It's meaningless and has no plot. Go watch interviews with the crew, they're aware they're making something that's just meaningless fun. However Gainaxfaggots had to start pretending it was a smart people anime.

Yes. The Madoka Magica fans are more intense but Haruhi Suzumiya really is one of those anime that almost everyone (on Yea Forums) likes.

No. The “DICK SYMBOLISM XD” is very convoluted and doesn’t blend well with the narrative. In the end, it feels like there are two stories playing at the same time, a zany story about super robots and a pretentious story about growing up. Because IT IS pretentious. They said something like “yeah it’s very crazy cuz rock n roll, adolescence, you know?” and everyone ate it without questioning it. People always say that the more you watch it the better it gets, you discover even more details and blah blah blah. In reality, the more you watch it, the more you see an overly extravagant in presentation (yet conventional in execution) story about growing up with disjointed symbolism.

Yeah, giant fan of it myself but I always get secondhand embarrassment whenever I see the Madoka-schizo proclaim it the greatest story ever in an unrelated thread.

I'd say of my top 10 the Lain and Mushishi fans are the most chill by far.

There's nothing to dislike about this show only because it's literally nothing: the show.

I didn't miss any of this when I watched it, the execution is just fucking garbage and the payoff not unique or interesting enough to be worth all the incredibly annoying tangents and distracting direction choices. It boils down to the most bog-standard coming of age arc or two you could find anywhere, except mixed with a bunch of non-sequitur cartoonish actions and highly exaggerated personalities that it make it hard to take the underlying character development seriously.

i just got done watching it again and if you find anything "tangential", "distracting" or "non-sequitur" i guaruntee you are not paying attention.
literally every scene of that show builds the characters or story in some way.
even if you just don't like it for taste reasons i find it bizarre you think it has no plot,
and if your beef is it being "cartoonish" or "exaggerated" then i have no words as you are on a forum that is literally for cartoons.

It has a decent one underneath the layers of crap, but they actively hinder it instead of supporting it. The ridiculous level of complexity regarding Naoto's robot activation is utterly unnecessary given that the only relevant points to take away from it involve him getting power and requiring a connection to Haruko to use it. The comic book shit that's used a little too frequently dumbs down the ability for visual symbolism to have any effect more than the haphazard usual animation already does. Oftentimes the characters speak to each other at ridiculous and inconsistent paces, to the point where all nuance is lost from what they're saying and you can only read the words themselves to glean any meaning. How are you supposed to praise a show filled with very human themes where no one acts anywhere close to a real human?

I've purged most of the later episodes from my mind since they were so dull, but I'll go back and find specific questionable direction choices if you're so inclined.

There's a decent chunk of Yea Forums that reeeee's over anything popular. Kyoani, gainax, trigger, khara, shaft... If this was a few years ago I'd say yuasa's works are unanimously loved but he now broke big with devilman, so now he's got that kind of hate too.

boko no pico is a masterpiece when you stop being acting like a cringy youtuber from 2007. It gets pretty deep, has a nice message, and pretty nice art.
