from my experience most proofreaders are useless, the best proofreaders are usually typesetters/redrawers.
Recruiting a proofreader is basically asking for a useless retard to do nothing, unless your english/language really sucks.

What scanners do you guys use? I recently bought an HP scanner-printer, it's doing some really strange things.
It will compress the file really badly on any scan under 600dpi and would not change the brightness or contrast as it's scanning no matter what I do.

Biggest problem here is the translator disappears for days at a time n never seems to deliver. Why did I bother?

Some translators go pretty far with leaving stuff untranslated. Like I'm fine with leaving concepts that are hard to translate and almost everyone knows untranslated but I've seen translations that just had "NANI?!?!?!" and "Ara ara," in it, which serves no real purpose I feel.

Then there are the translations where every other character talks in third person, which simply makes it sound weird in English.

I know of one scanlator who leaves shit like "shounen" untranslated. Fuck that guy.

I only leave honorifics and onii-chan, onee-chan and derivates.

If the setting isn't Japan I remove all honorifics. This is easier for medieval settings, since they have their own titles Sir, Lord, etc.

As for Japanese settings, I tend to leave words that I think are easily recognizable even by a western audience, like banzai, shogun, etc.

Because people don't say Ara Ara in English. It should be adapted or dropped all together unless it bears significance (sometimes even in this case), otherwise you're an insufferable weeb.

What about when a character does nothing but grunt for several speech bubbles? I've seen this in series involving a lot of fighting. I know at least some of the groups change it to short statements instead, like "Bring it on!" or "You've never defeat me!"

That's when I had to accept that I'm translating for retards.

I always translate "ufufu" to "ufufu", because it's just extra flavor, everyone recognizes it anyway, and it's just a way to transcribe laughter anyway. "Ara ara" is about 50-50, and then you'd have to be a lvl. 100 weeb to actually translate "nani" to "nani", though I'll admit it's funny sometimes.

People often aren't used to chapters releasing so close together. They might only notice only the most recent one and miss the previous one if it's uploaded in quick succession.

It's best to wait a few days in between chapter uploads.

Once you set up your fonts, character and paragraph styles, the workflow is much faster.

This always seems to be the issue. Either a more accurate but stilted translation, or a less accurate translation but that reads better in English.

Since most people who read fan TLs don't know Japanese to begin with, they can easily pick up on if a translation is stilted, but won't notice it being less accurate unless it ends up contradicting something in story.

That is kind of one of the reasons I picked up this series. I can understand Japanese pretty well, and I don't think my English is too bad, but I've never seriously translated anything before. I tend to stick to the original wording too much as a result.

I've heard that the number of people who will actively participate in some way is typically around 1% of the total viewers. Yea Forums is an anomaly in that around 10% of viewers make posts.

You have to start somewhere. When I first started I did the same thing and got some awkward results.

Eventually I read some raws for a series someone else was translating, then compared their translation to the raws. Their translation was more liberal, but read very well. After that, I try to use them as a basis for how I can phrase things to sound better in English.

Illustrator has some kind of black magic fuckery smoothing algorithm for calligraphic brushes that makes handwritten text look considerably better, and I can't seem to find the equivalent on Photoshop, if it even exists

That's because Illustrator remembers the path you drew, smoothes it and then draws the stroke along it. Photoshop draws immediately including all your jittering. There are some extensions like lazy nezumi that let you draw smoother, but it won't do the same as Illustrator.

Okay, you don't have to spoonfeed me, but could you point me in the right direction? I know I could use google, but thats a mixed bag of results.

My issue is that the editor text on the splash page is almost always over a complex image. Usually it's also partially covering up a characters arm. I once got better results by just cloning a section of the characters other arm to fill in its missing section.

Content aware fill is only really useful on things like sky backgrounds or other very simple things.

Don't forget to skip redrawing entirely and just put boxes over everything to cover it up. It saves a ton of time and it's not like you're getting paid to do this bro.

if the text is over artwork and not in a bubbles then depending on the type redrawing may be necessary but first typeset the text and add a white outline, this reduces necessary redrawing to a minimum

Digital raws make the work you were thinking of basically non-existent unless the group you work with uses physical scans.

Technically, you could still do the work if you clone or redraw minimally and just box the remaining text. Obviously some people will view this as lazy, but there are groups that do it that way.

I personally use only Impact and Arial Black when I'm feeling particularly fancy, really gives the scans a solid kind of feeling

Where do people find raws usually? I mostly see just an influx of new isekai on ihscan.

I have a feeling that readers are more inclined to comment on scanlations with low viewercount because they fear the scanlator(s) may drop it if it gets to little attention.
Which probably isn't to far from the truth. most people either scanlate for clickcount or because they enjoy something and want to see other people react to it (well, and for money). For the latter the clickcount isn't really all that important as long as some people write what they think about what happened in the chapter.

Sometimes what people choose to comment on is unexpected. I had a chapter with some serious developments and most comments were people laughing at the character's overly dramatic exit from the room that was only a single page of the chapter.

Which is a shame, the comments the shit I work on gets on mdex are almost exclusively atrocious. I wish a single percent of the readers spent half a minute writing what they think about some random aspect of the fucking 50 page chapter they got for free.

They're supposed to be a site to keep track of scanlation releases, their FAQ even says not to create pages for new titles until there's a translation for them, but I guess times have changed and they just allow everything now. Still probably not a comprehensive list, but it's actually a good start. Especially if you're into Yaoi, because fuck me, do they have a lot of it.

their conditions only say not to make pages for untranslated oneshots, any other series page is fine.

What causes these breaks in the screentone when I scan?
Is it a problem with the scanner itself, or am I doing something wrong? I don't have any of the extra options turned on, and I still see breaks appear, regardless of how I orient the page on the scanner.

I enjoy the manga I'm scanning and enjoy seeing people enjoy it themselves. I wouldn't mine if the manga only had a couple hundred views so long I as still see people are enjoying it. I just wish my translating and typesetting was better

It’s the easy way, that’s how my ripper works too. Async it and it’s pretty fast too, even across dozens of sites. I cannot imagine this generating much traffic if all you do is check the new releases page.

Checking the new releases makes sense, and maybe the associated manga page if there's an update to see if anything was missed. If they were checking every manga page constantly that would be excessive.

But probably still negligible compared to the users. I call bullshit on that batoto excuse.

I tried less filters but you would have to burn a lot, so I think it would be acceptable to lose some part of the details here in order to avoid having to do that. Also, I would recommend using an adjustment layer instead of applying it directly, at least while you're testing stuff.

The scans are not very good to begin with, but I would recommend waiting for an experienced editor's opinion, since I'm a solo TL and my editing skills are about average.

A TL ghosted me and I'd rather he come back and take responsibility by finishing it out than continue forcing me to take charge of somehow finishing it without him.

Some people just can't stand confrontation.

And it also matters what his former group members said about him after he left. If they're worried than just post on his old account that he's fine. But if they're super pissed at him and blamed him for the series being dropped, then maybe don't say anything.

Usually it's one person holding all the others up from being done. Machikado Mazoku would be up to the current translation thread if the TS wasn't the slow one with a chapter a week.

Typically because they have no work ethic and won't even touch the thing for weeks because they're incapable of overpowering the urge to be a lazy piece of shit. What should astound you is how people who have been making frequent releases for over a year still haven't learned how to center text in a bubble or do a basic clone tool touch-up. They can't be oblivious to how shit it is, but it baffles me that someone can at the same time be invested enough to keep churning out releases and not give a single shit about the quality of their work.

What he means is that a translation should be reworded so that it actually reads like a well written sentence in the target language and not like stilted ESL crap. This is something all translators know and do.
It's "translate what's being said, not HOW it's said", not "toss out the original line and replace it with what you feel should've been said".

It depends. But the general reason for slow releases tends to be that the group spends way too much time on shit that's not really necessary.

I'll be honest, that's me. I've tried using technicians that guides and advice other user have given me but I just don't get it. I'll probably take a break once I've finished the volume and take time to pirate/learn photoshop

Centering takes far less time on PS, since you can move it with the text tool itself. GIMP is good enough if you can get it right in the first try, but there's far less text manipulation tools.

Because you can't clean/redraw/handwrite in indesign, only typeset(and it's used to prep for print). Publishers already get layered chapters most of the time, so there's no need for photoshop, obviously it's the opposite for scanlation.

Mangakakalot seems to be the most active one, since you need Facebook to comment it's literally a den of SEAmonkeys.

99% of the time it's this in my experience. I currently have 2 different TLs that said they'd give me a script in a week or two but it's been a couple months with nothing. But I can't really complain since its doing work for free after all.

Worry once they directly send you a love letter, which is almost unheard of coming from the nip publishers themselves, since there's no incentive for them to take a dude half a globe away into international court over a fan TL. Different story if it's been licensed though.

It hasn't been licensed in any western country as far as I know, but I'm not sure how unheard of that is, I once asked a scan group why they dropped a manga and they said they were asked by the publishers to take it down. Apparently it was just a request instead of a legal threat but I'd still shit my pants.

Just continue TL-ing until they actually ask. They're not going to take legal action if that's what you're worried about.

Also, I can only think of a few cases where the authors, not the publishers, request their work not be scanlated, like Dakini.

On the other side, the manga project is on hold, but the anime releases are moving along, hopefully will release an episode in the pipeline soon and should start translating the next one on the weekend or something. Two bloody years nobody touched this show, what even happened to fansub.

I'm actually trying to find someone to translate two episodes of a Chinese half-doujin anime (it feels like they secured some funding but who knows), it has two girls being very friendly with each other and kicking a lot of ass Asian-martial-arts-movie style, and it's all set in ancient China.

GuodongSubs released one episode but their English is not very good so I'm not sure how correct that even is.

You don't always get them layered that way. I have been handed things in the last two years which were just a flat starter image for files because no one thought it would be licensed for international release. So it depends on what the Japanese supply in the end. You work with what you get. Typically anything I see needs more work because I'm more experienced with the old ways to do this. Sometimes I get a one-off or a series dropped on me because they need it faster than who has it now or someone's sick/late, and as always it takes no time to do something that easy.

I did work for another (smaller) publisher on the side recently with someone else's name attached to the contract and man did they make Viz seem like they have their shit together. It probably won't even publish for another month and the amount of "well this was re-translated so could you..." I see for emails is silly. Finish the translation, get it approved, and then send it off to be finished. Trying to do a faster turn-around because you think the translation will get approved is so backwards.

You turn in chapters or volumes, so pages per day is up to you. There are deadlines, there is no praise for doing it faster, and there is always grief for getting it day of. Ones that publish online have faster turn around dates, obviously.

My favorite thing is getting to see color splash pages and covers. There are some beautiful ones it should be considered a crime to cover back up with text. In the older days you could leak those out, but the circle of people seeing it is much smaller now.

Depends on the artist but all the files we got when I worked for a doujin publisher were always layered. Just sometimes the art wasn't fully drawn behind the sfx so you still had to redraw some bits anyway.

It never happened to me because no one cares about the manga I work on, but I'd be annoyed if it was a series I enjoyed and the snipers just did a piss poor job on it.

It's mainly psychological. When you put a lot of time and effort into something and someone comes along and undermines your effort it can be frustrating. If you read this thread you'll find most scanlation groups find reward in the reactions of the people who consume the work you've done. Some do it for money but those guys are scumbags. Personal pride gets in your head that it's part of you the work is being done. When someone comes along and beats you to the punch with an obvious shit attempt it can kind of be defeating the whole point you're doing the scanlation.

That would be frustrating. But surely, if it were a really shitty rush job, the reading public would be a tad more discerning

Most people will use kiss* sites anyway where everything is compressed to hell and back, can't tell if a translation's any good, can't tell if the writing is any good since they're just as bad at English as the translators, don't really value all of the effort that's gone into redrawing and typeset and don't even understand that it takes effort, etcetera.

I sometimes work with physical scans. Before today I'd just microwave the magazine to weaken the glue so I could tear out the pages without damaging them much. But man did that make the magazine stink and I think it was damaging the ink and possibly the paper.

So today I went and bought an X-ACTO knife (#1 for precision cutting and trimming) and it's a definite improvement. I can get a very clean cut on the pages very quickly.

Why not just use an iron and melt the glue by bringing it close to the spine?

Plus, I like the idea of having a perfectly intact magazine after cutting the pages out, so really the X-ACTO knife is what I'll probably stay with.

It's the hardest if you don't know japanese and have to use the Google translate app to OCR the characters, put them into a google doc, fix up the broken ones, and then translate it with google translate website / yandex / jisho, try to figure out what it's trying to say with the pictures, and somehow get it wrong anyway.

That would be when a character spoke like a complete hick. The readers found the accent really annoying, so I just leave the accent out of the translation.

I'm an ESL so I just don't even try to translate accents, though if someone is a complete hick and it's plot-important (sigh, that one manga) I fuck up their speech a little.

Hardest to translate is old-style Japanese though, I never formally studied the language so I don't really know my き-forms、し-forms, same grammar that meant different things, or much of that obscure vocab. Unfortunately it's also hard to find anyone who does know it, for a much more accurate result.

I would think that if you feed a grayscale image to an optimizer - it should make sure to use the grayscale mode and a fitting bit depth. However if using lossless optimization it does probably make sense to select grayscale in Photoshop just to make sure there isn't any accidental color pixel anywhere. But optimizer is still important as I'm not sure Photoshop itself saves PNGs in the right mode, it will likely save a bloated PNG no matter what mode you use in Photoshop itself.

I don't have too much experience with png optimizers, but from what I've seen you usually you only get a few kB from properly exported pictures. Not worth the hassle, if you ask me.

Maybe I don't know how to export pictures properly from Photoshop but I often get 20-50% savings from optimizers.

I use Save for Web with 128 or 256 colors for grayscale png pages and no optimizer I've tried could take off more than 5% at absolute best. For most it was around 1-2%, so I just don't bother with them.

I use 17 colors like some tutorial from pre 2010 said. Looks fine to me, file size gets halved last I checked.
