Pacing is quite shit. They rushed the contents of the last week's episode because they wanted to finish it at all costs with the scene of Kanata's arm being cut off. Charce's flashback could have been longer and slower, you don't actually have time to catch your breath between one scene and the other. Seira is introduced, and dies 3 minutes later. The manga has a much better structure and a solid pacing.
And now the last episode is 50 minutes for the epilogue when a regular episode would have sufficed.

As adaptation, it's obvious the anime staff tried their best and cared to pull this off. Some stuff was changed or reworked here and there, but you got the whole pack as it is.

Space is big. Striking earth from 8 years away on a rock with no thrusters is a literal sniper trick that puts world class snipers to shame. Break the rock up and that means most of those bits will miss your planet entirely. The rest can be towed away by ship. Even the ancient Astra has good thrusters, good structure and can give a good tug.

I did think that there was more going on due to the coincidences too. The jumps make sense though, those aren't a plot hole. That planet was Earth. When they first went from Earth to Astra to even find it, a route had to exist, so the fact that the route exists is perfectly logical now that we know the whole story. It's just that they got very lucky to pop out near a functional ship.

The "Astra isn't Earth and Russian girl is from over 100 years in the past" thing didn't add as much to the plot as I thought it would. Or did I miss something? The altered state of the world would have been more or less as easy to swallow if there was no lie and the story was known to take place in 2163 to begin with. They still had a huge war to facilitate societal changes. Any further alterations to history were still explained with "well everyone just kept quiet about it." The driving force of character conflict at the end was still centered around the clone stuff despite Astra being the later reveal.

I think the most unrealistic part of this show was that two married men went off on an adventure without their wives. If that actually happened in real life, we would be able to find people to adventure with, but no. Everyone grew up, got married, had kids, and got boring.

How can one boy be so handsome, but also moe. It's the same with Zack. I loved the scene where he said Quitterie was cute and that he always assumed they were a couple. The deadpan delivery was hilarious.
This show was a fun ride. Some of the tone-shifts (into comedy) were a little jarring or poor and the writing at times was a little lacking, but still an enjoyable anime.
I'm just glad that despite ending almost exactly like Planetes, at least Kanata didn't put a baby in Aries before leaving for 50 years. What a shit way to ruin a great ending that was.

this aint planetes, user. wormhole tech being available again means the expedition will probably last as long as their consumables, a couple months probably
they're out exploring presumably at the united government's behest and employ to find suitable planets for wormhole sites
go to the hole at mcpa to spit them out at earth, then hunt for planets of interest within their food supply range.
arrive, create wormhole link and return home and repeat, where the new gate allows others i.e. biologists/geologists/etc to go through for study
luckily they already have ftl drives so galactic colonization will be a cinch for them, its just taking the slow way to planets of interest and establishing two-way gates for instantaneous travel

Ulgar was my least favorite character. He pointed a gun at and threatened to kill the son of the guy that the thought might maybe possibly had some influence in his brother's death that Ulgar also believed was a murder instead of a suicide based on limited evidence. I would have given the series a 10/10 instead of 9/10 if not for him. At least attacking the family of a suspect shows that he'll have a great career in journalism.
