wtf do you mean style over substance, the story and world felt incredibly fleshed out. without spoiling anything, the ending parts made me feel very tense and on-edge in a kill-la-kill kind of way (which is a good thing.)

It is though. The visual and action is kino but the narrative itself is so lacking that they lamp shade at the end with a literal Deus ex Machina to solve their problems.

People still think that Trigger will eventually produce something TTGL/P&S level quality and they keep getting proven wrong.

I thought it was an excellent anime.

I don’t like it when trigger takes it’s plots seriously, that’s what happened with darling in the franxx and it was a train wreck. Trigger rightfully didn’t take the plot seriously and it was just interesting and cool enough to fit the awesome visual storytelling they had.

Moreover, the plot wasn’t bad at all. It reminded me of zootopia, but without the awful furry elements. It was fun and the story fit the mood for a hour and a half long movie.

I think it’s wrong to expect a blade runner 2049 level story from trigger. They are best at visual storytelling, and none of their best works have well thought out plots or stories.

This. "Style over substance" is a criticism that is constantly thrown at Trigger works, but downplays all the substance in the style itself. I could watch this film muted and I feel like I would get almost as much out of it from the outstanding direction alone. It almost makes me wish I could watch a version of the film with just sound effects and music

It's a fucking Trigger film. You were an idiot to expect great plot. Style actually matters when executed properly and Promare looked amazing.
