The "Holy Grail War" is something that happens but more about about the conflict seven designed Holy Grails placed on certain points of time made.
Just watch First Order with is the Nostalgia pandering tutorial when they pretended FSN was relevant to FGO (which eclipsed it in popularity) and later episode 0 and you'll get the basics.
