Fans of the character Naruto are emotionally required to consider whoever he wound up with to be the best girl, otherwise reality would be too cruel to face. The girl could be a cardboard cutout and there would be real people getting into fights with people about her being the best. Conversely if Hinata still existed but were not Naruto's love interest, but still had the same level of overall accomplishment and relevance, the amount of people considering her best girl would only match those of other minor characters, not be in constant angry "competition" threads with the female lead.

I bet that people would find reasons to bitch about it, like "yeah of course, go after the girl that hates you and is obsessed with the bad boy, eventually after enough abuse she will get tired and be your gf". People that complain and shippers want realistic romance, and realistic for them is a romance filled with pointless soap-opera drama.
