The movie wasn't trying to get anything across. Kaiba actually succeeds in getting to where Atem is. If the message was "let go of those who are gone", then Kaiba's achievements shit all over that.

If you think about it, Kaiba is a better main character. While Yugi is always muh fate and muh friends, Kaiba is always going against all odds to show that effort is what makes your dream comes true, not some make believe bullshit.

The main problem with Kaiba is that he doesn't put as much effort into his deckbuilding as he does with his other autistic ventures. He never seems to come up with interesting or unique strategies. It's always just "AND WITH THIS NEXT CARD, I'LL TURN MY DRAGON INTO AN EVEN BIGGER DRAGON."

I dont see the problem, theres a difference between winning a duel and dealing with a demon god from the shadow realm, it was obvious Yugi wasnt gonna make it no matter how good he got at dueling, only the power of Atem would be able to stop that.

It's strange that Yugi seems to have no real powers, though. Surely being the vessel of the Pharaoh should grant him some protection.

Yeah, if you like the show's Kaiba this is the perfect movie for you. While everyone has moved on with their lives after the events of the anime Kaiba is still stuck in the "I wanna beat the pharaoh" phase which makes sense as he was never able to do that and knows he cannot be the best unless he somehow finds a way to beat him which is hard considering he's no longer around.

Though technically, anime!Kaiba did got over the pharaohs passing, due to the fact that he was directly involved in the final arc events, from Bakura's mystic RPG, to the ceremonial duel.

Manga!Kaiba on the other hand, was nowhere to be seen and he never really knew about, or understood Yugi's bond with Atem.

Kaiba cheating Gozaburo and driving him to suicide before he can even shave is always a highlight of his backstory for me.

I never understood why Kaiba never transferred his grudge to normal Yugi, considering normal Yugi was already better than Atem by the end of the series.

Maybe Kaiba is weirdly rational in that he can't beat the guy who beat Atem unless he beats Atem himself, or it's just not the same. It's like trying to hate a cute puppy instead of this smug asshole.

The rod didn't control Kaiba, it just gave him the suggestion to do it by showing him using the Blue Eyes against Atem in Egypt.

Anime!Kaiba WOULD have done that, since he understood that yeah, Egyptian magic and bullshit are real and, he would have witnessed that theres someone even better than Atem.

But DsoD doesnt follow Anime!Kaiba, it follows Manga!Kaiba. The Kaiba who didnt witnessed the events of the ceremonial duel and what happened before, The Kaiba who never really believed in ANCIENT EGYPT!, The Kaiba who never really understood what the bond between Yugi and Atem really meant.

All that Kaiba knew was that there was a guy inside Yugi's puzzle who fought his battles for him.

Despite all that happened in Battle city, he didnt gave two shits about that. Therefore he never knew that the pharaoh left the puzzle and passed to afterlife.
