I think they will probably be some kind of epic final battle, maybe some scene with Rei manipulated by Gendo or Fuyutsuki, with the probable sacrifice of Misato or Kaji.

Because they've been fighting a hard war for 14 years and don't have time for bullshit. Even if by accident, the kid put them in that situation, the literal end of days. It would have been better to show him a bit more compassion but 14 years of constant warfare changes a person and makes them lose their sentimental side.

If Shinji stayed on the Wunder for a bit longer I'd imagine he would get debriefed sooner or later, whether officially or not. He literally spent like 10 minutes on the ship before he bounced because Rei came. They had no time to re-establish bridges. And then the next time they see him he's, again, about to actually end the world FOR REAL this time. Misato and Asuka aren't entirely blameless, but it's a pretty normal way to react to a kid that almost made humanity go extinct and made you fight and scrape by for your life for more than a decade.

That's only speculation, we never see their point of view so there's no reasonable expectation for the audience to empathize with them

I hope we get a mini-series spin-off showing their day to day after 4.0 comes out to bridge the gap between 2.0 and 3.0. I'd love to see the misadventures of Asuka/Misato and crew as they try to reconcile what just happened and their frustrations over Shinji that they can't get closure over.

I rewatched NGE on Netflix last week with some friends, and the Asuka/Shinji dynamic really doesn't get that much focus and screentime as I thought it did. So I can understand why Anno would put it on the backburner when retelling the story in Rebuild.
