Watch the episodes with Mao again because the entire point of that was introducing that geass can grow so powerful that you can't turn it off anymore. The mini arc ends with Lelouch swearing to CC that he won't ever lose control of his powers like Mao.

It's literally a set up.

I don't think those two are comparable. Light was a sociopath drunk on power and attempting to become a god. There's a lot of retarded conveniences in the story, Light had a FBI tracking him and when he gets him killed the same guy just had to have a wife that use to be one that specifically worked with L of all people before. Not to mention Misa as a character was only shoehorned in because of Jump. She was nothing but a nuisance to the plot.
