And yes, the pic you posted works, because it has a certain theme to it and takes a comical approach. It doesn't just act as if the original cast were cats, it makes it clear that there's some abstraction happening there.
Compare that to that other piece that just puts different hairstyles on a sameface and some random (oversized) default body-models with proportions from an early-2000s Western H-site porn parody.
Add in totally random shading and highlighting and you get whatever that thing is. You can't pretend that the "artist" had any intention of even doing the characters justice.

Basically two eyeshapes: Wide and narrow.
And the eyebrows are pretty simplistic and not too different from one another.
Many don't match the characters' original eye shapes in the first place.

Those are the worst problem in that pic. Yes, the breast sizes are different from one another as well, but so what? They're not even remotely close to the characters' actual proportions.
As for the body shapes, well, they aren't that different. Apart from their heights and breast sizes, they have no variation in their relative proportions. No differences in shoulder width, for example. It is practically the same body type resclaed and with tits of different sizes slapped on.

Yes!
Because most anime does give its characters distinct facial structures. ZLS was exceptionally strong in that regard. Compare Sakura's egghead to Saki's sharp jawlines or Ai's triangular features to Junko's wider face with slightly puffy cheeks. Subtle differences, sure, but they are there!
