Honestly I can't admire Hina as much as I did for Mitsuha, largely because Hodaka was the absolute sole protagonist in this movie. With Mitsuha it's more down-to-earth how a girl who likes to play cupid ends up being the one falling in love, but Hina is just too perfect and completely not selfish, which affects the story. Hina just didn't feel real.

That was a major gripe I had with the film. We weren't given a clear motivation for Hodaka leaving the island apart from "chasing muh sun".

my headcanon is that he was abused but the abuse stopped when he was arrested because the parents realized the police would be watching Hodaka closely

Keisuke "changing sides" when he heard Hodaka yell "I just want to see her one last time" really tugged at my heartstrings
Seeing Hina smile again after seeing her husbando after 3 years was also so nice

That's not really what I meant in terms of not agreeing with the birthday part. I don't think she needs to an "event" to "remember" drowning Tokyo - I think she lives with the guilt every day.
During her job as the sunshine girl, she met a lot of people who wanted sunshine.
She wanted the sun so she could walk with her mom outside one last time.
Keisuke wanted the sun so he could play with his sick daughter.
A bride wanted the sun so she could get married in a white dress.
Several kids wanted the sun so they could play outside.
Taki's grandma wanted the sun so she could preform a ritual for her late husband.
She probably has a mountain of guilt resting upon her shoulders for causing the sun to disappear, despite it not being her fault. At the end of the movie, we can see her praying for sun. She most likely did that every day for the past 3 years hoping for something to happen, but nothing did because she no longer has those powers.

I was already planning to watch it twice and even buy the BluRay whenever it comes out. It's not Shinkai's best but it still was an emotional ride.

I just felt she had very little for herself to consider, and that the completely-selfless maiden type is really offputting and unbelievable for someone as young as her. I do think gave me a pretty good insight for her deeper feelings, but they never got to be visibly expressed in the film due to Hodaka being 98% the central perspective. (The other being Suga)
