It's a minor league but winning a minor league actually makes sense from the perspective of natural character progression. Nobody goes from nobody/loser to world champion, they will usually start by accomplishing themselves in lesser competitions like this one. If anything it shows they put a little more thought into this than "okay fine, here's your trophy", they're actually trying to integrate this into the story in a way that it can influence future arcs.

What I mean by this is now they have the opportunity to do a story arc where Ash is the up-and-coming rookie who won Alola or something along those lines, with him working his way toward the "big leagues" from there. He hasn't made it but he's made actual progress. It breaks the 10 year stasis he's been in.

Well yea obviously it’s up to the writers but the fact is that Unova ash was characterized as a fucking dipshit out of the gate. You had Iris talking down on him the entire time, and he kept doing dumb shit like forgetting fucking type advantage. Through his actions, you could tell he didn’t deserve to win.

Kalos Ash started the anime fighting a fucking dragon Pokémon barehanded. He was shown as being competent and confident the entire story. His travel companions looked up to him and for the first time ever, he seemed like the definitive leader of his group. From the very beginning, the watcher can feel Ash’s experience as a veteran Pokémon trainer. Now when you add in the fact that you have a soul bonded Greninja training up a super water shuriken all story, and the fact that Ash was getting closer and closer beating Alain with each encounter, it’s only natural to assume that he would pull out his victory against him in the title match after pulling out the 100% completed water shuriken. Through his actions and demeanor, along with what was foreshadowed, he deserved the fucking championship. Not to mention his team was actually fully trained/evolved sans Pikachu, which is unusual for Ash.

So yea, Ash fucking deserved it. People got excited for XY because Ash was finally showing all that experience he accumulated after all the past regions. He FELT like he was in control, he FELT like what a veteran Pokémon trainer should feel like. Ask yourself, why did people even flock to XY anime out of nowhere? People everyone could feel that this was it, that Ash was finally hitting his stride. And that’s exactly why it hurt when it didn’t happen, because everything about the XY made you believe otherwise.

A.The final battle in Kalos was way shittier, rather it could arguably be the same in terms of battle writing. The detailed look of the animation was good, sure. It had flare but no substance. I would take a less detailed battle animation but have some form of significance taken from it than flashy gimmicks and disappointment.

B.In this point in time, this is pretty much in the post game chapter.

C. Ash is already shown to be way stronger and competent. They only reboot him each region because he trains new Pokemon.

C. Ash worked for the win so it isn't a pity win. A pity win is if they let Ash use a way weaker pokemon to beat Gladion's team. It was a fair battle and great achievement.

I hope said reboot will finally be a proper adaptation of the manga or a series like Pokémon Origins that goes its own way based on the games.

1. The league was invite only to compensate for a lack of gyms. Ash is invited due to his status as a consistent top performer worldwide.

2. Make opponents actually difficult, and bring back some old faces for 3v3. If they're retiring Ash, bring back Richie, Paul, Sawyer & Harrison. Have some of them face new characters from this region and or Ash/each other.

3. Make Ash put in a call to Oak to get Charizard, Heracross, Grenininja, Gliscor, Lycanroc and have Rowlet evolve into Decidueye. Make it seem like Ash has to pull out all the stops and bring a carefully curated and ultimate squad.

4. Make battles 3v3 and from quarters up 6v6.

5. Instead of a battle royale, have a set of double battles.
