Well when it comes to the CG and ML idols you really don't need the anime. Their entries and stories are fairly short because there are so many of them. You can all you need out of 2 or 3 paragraphs. Some are more interesting than others. Game wise all you need is to watch youtube play through and that's about it. CG also has these 5komas and One Page so you get some story there. Games can be disregarded.

Everybody knows the OG idols, they have been around since 2004 and have had their story told over and over again and again. 765ML might be hard because there are so many of them and they take bits and pieces from the OG cast. If you want small iM@S go with the new Shiny Colors group 283, they have a story similar to 765 OG cast.

They do get paid. Its average pay based off of whoever hires them. Idols can be hired to do events for organizers and the like. There is also concert tickets which individual idols can make money off of and merch. Competitions and in house competitions are the only thing I don't know if they even get paid. Clarice is a perfect example of proof on idols getting paid, Clarice donates her earnings to the Church. Some idols do it as a "after school job" or "part time job". Its weird but its the basic jist. Yayoi's situation is a messed up one because her parents might be squandering her earnings, she is also confirmed to spend her money on her family. There is also Shiho from ML who spends her money on her family due to her dad being MIA

Yes, you'll need a Japanese IP address to start the download, but only to start. Once it begins you're free to drop the VPN. You may need a VPN with Starlight Stage when you first launch the game, but likewise, once your account is generated and it starts downloading assets (the screen with Uzuki/Rin/Mio and a download bar) you can disconnect from the VPN and proceed normally. Tunnelbear for android phones or vpngate+softether if you're emulating are all you need.
