Not going to lie, I consider Utena a masterpiece of mankind, but this show was a bit of a disappointment.
The plot seemed arbitrary and doesn't add up when you think about it. After a certain point the characters just completely stopped looking for the Penguindrum. Moreover, what the Diary -was- changed completely halfway through from a book of prophecy Ringo was fulfilling to just a omnipotent magical object, and the original use was never explained.
That said, otherwise it was fun & stylish; I just don't think I'll ever want to revisit it.

Utena was a good show because the symbolism and visual presentation isn’t as convoluted, the secondary cast has a reason to be and is developed (as the main characters). It may be pseudo episodic but that’s so much better than this mess.

i liked it, but i agree that it was such a mess in narrative. Mostly because you need a lot of context in some japanese events and its society, also its almost needed to watch night on the galactic railroad to get it´s symbolims at the fullest
