Pre-2000 anime

Whatcha Whatchin? Just finished Wicked City and the action scenes were animated pretty well

My roommate and I stumbled on Goku Midnight Eye on Prime while drunk the other night. Very fun watch.

I also caught a random 80s anime fillm on TV a few weeks back. I wish I could remember the name. It starts off with a girl going through an abandoned city, and then this mysterious man comes in to protect her. At one point they're on a subway and then some spooky shit happens on it?? Idk I was also drunk for that.

Key the metal idol, it's kinda shit

Ah, I found it! It was Demon City Shinjuku.

Yeah I didn't like Key the metal idol at all

How the fuck was Demon City Shinjuku playing on a random TV channel in this day and age?

Harlock and Touch!

>Finished up Saint Seiya the original series
>Was extremely mad about posieden arc.
>Everything feels rushed Seiya is not his usual self
>Find out in the Manga everything makes sense and a lot was skipped over
>Researches, finds out Toei rushed through the arc with 12 episodes remaining due to the animators being shifted on Dragon Ball Z
>Watched Hades Arc: Sanctuary, Inferno and Elysium.
>Amazed how well the animation held up and is of the mainline.
>Watches the Saint Seiya movie that was supposed to be a trilogy but was cancelled after the first
>It was incredible
>Currently watching Soul Of Gold. Nice homage to the Gold Saints and the series
I am also getting started on Yu Yu Hakusho and I have to say 4 episodes in. I am liking it so far.

Would you recommend Saint Seiya? I've been looking at it for a while, but I can't make my mind up if I wanna watch it or not.. What would you give it outta ten?

I would recommend you watch it. While the subs are not the best (would recommend Animehub to watch or Animevibe to avoid the bad VHS versions and some of the subs) and to avoid filler, and Posieden (just read the Manga arc on it and skip the arc anime wise) as it it really short when you do so. It is a solid anime series it really moves quick to get to the action but I would say it really picks up on the 12 temples arc and does not let up each series is better than the last and the writer just knows how to build characters and how to have power walls. Saint Seiya is popular in Japan, Brazil and even in Mexico next to Dragon Ball.

I would rank it as a respectable performer against Dragon Ball and the like it is a classic for a reason. I would give it an 7.8 out of 10 on the original series. But after that I would dare say a 9 on the Hades Arc and the movie because of how much they really try to deny Posieden arc never happened in it and honestly Toei put in so much work on it animation wise it is great. It's worth it.

Saint Seiya OP.

Saint Seiya ED
Here is something just to get your interest up on it as well.

Finished Sailor Moon R, the alien arc was shit and though I liked Chibi Usa she took too much screen time from everyone else. I also didn't like how every character that isn't a Sailor pretty much disappeared from the show, it was good but overall I liked the first season more. I also watched the movie, it was fun.

How do you stumble into Demon City Shinjuku and why did it take you till 2019 to discover it? You fucking zoomers really have no regard for the classics

>till 2019
Why not?
Even if you started watching anime somewhere in early 00s Kawajiri flying over your head isn't completely out of chance.
The only thing people went out of way to recommend were Ninja Scroll and Vampire.

Reminder that the golden era of anime is 1997-2004 (1995-2004 if you want the best decade)

I should properly rewatch Saint Seiya past the Poseidon arc. Right now they are broadcasting Lost Canvas on TV here where I live.

Still have Tatami listed for watching but I can't just make enough time in my schedule for it.

HxH '99 all day everyday

First thing you need to know is that the anime is sensibly different from the manga for a number of reasons.
The anime's first arc is more like fantasy Tiger Mask before the prevalent feel sets in around episode 15 or so. The Sanctuary saga as a whole does a lot of things right, it keeps moving relatively fast and stays very entertaining from around episode 25 nearly till the very end. The shonen manga morals are steady but not too annoying since they're tied with brutal violence and ideals of sacrifice. Most of the Gold Saints' moves and armors are great too.
Asgard is a bad filler only worth speedwatching for the cool armors and to see how the end ties with the retooling of the Poseidon arc. Poseidon was cut short but at least it's not boring, although the two ending episodes are clearly rushed and a bit underwhelming.

The Hades trilogy is more recent and pretty good.

Do it. Hades: Sanctuary, Inferno and Elysium in that order after Posieden. You should also watch the movie after that despite the fact it was cancelled as it was supposed to be a Trilogy. The animation had so much attention and detail put into it. Also The spinoffs that are loved by everyone is Lost Canvas(the one you are watching) and Soul Of Gold. Both are great. Omega is loathed(disliked by the older fans, loved by the younger).

I could not have explained it any better. I always feel like Saint Seiya is really underatted in the West.

Recently watched Cyber City with my sister also directed by kawajiri. I really need to check out ninja scroll.

Anyway, Cyber City's OP is great, and the show itself feels like proto-Psycho Pass. Except Cyber City is way better than psycho pass.

Setting is extremely interesting, and the main characters being criminals really adds to the show. Each of the characters is a different kind of criminal (not like rapist/murderer but career criminal/solo criminal), and this reflects well in their arcs. Character designs are great, and there are some legitimately beautiful shots. In the first episode, there's actually this shot that looks extremely similar to the silhouette shot in GitS. Cyber City came out five years before GitS.

Future Boy Conan, just started it.
I love it but it reminds me of Castle in the Sky too much

Vampire Princess Miyu.

Getting through turn a gundam. The first few episodes are really unremarkable but its starting to pick up really well

I recently watched the UK release for this; the soundtrack is fantastic and some of the lines are comedy gold.

Other than the second to last episode being a massive info dump done for the sake of time running out, what didn't you like about it?

Hey thank you for this super detailed and useful reply, one day I'll definitely watch everything.

>always calls the thread pre-2000 anime
>not pre-2000 anime and manga
well, what have you been reading, fellow anons?

Read a fuckton of popular old manga and I'm struggling to find old less mainstream long manga, where should I look for recommendations?

bump

I don't think there are many english-speaking places discussing old manga, let alone non-mainstream ones. Feel free to prove me wrong, anons.

I think Yea Forums is really the best place to ask for that kind of recommendations, though I'd suggest user to open a thread at /wsr/.

I don't normally watch mecha anime. How is Gaogaigar?

Attached: gaogaigar-690.jpg (350x520, 53K)

It's very mecha anime. A very good mecha anime but it's not gonna win you over if you're not a fan.

I can't decide between watching Slayers or Knight Ramune first. I've got both on my harddrive just sitting there and I really want to watch both but I have a hard time watching multiple series at the same time. At this rate I might just decide on a coin toss

Attached: a.png (660x427, 649K)

What's an actually-good old-school anime? I think the oldest one I've ever actually watched properly is the Toei Yu-Gi-Oh! run. I tried to watch Akira but that shit was just nasty to look at. The Gunnm OVA was comfy. So preferably something nice to look at that isn't set in cyberpunk or space.

I think Slayers also mentioned by this user can be considered "old school" anime in its genre.

>I tried to watch Akira but that shit was just nasty to look at.

Attached: nothing to Puru about.png (640x480, 257K)

The best way of proceeding is usually working your way up from more mainstream and newer to less mainstream and older by finding out what the influences and inspirations of mangaka were. Also keep in mind a lot of good stuff is untranslated in English and most of gekiga isn't to everyone's taste.

What a coincidence, I finished ZZ the other day. I can see why /m/ calls it a pleb filter, but I was honestly amazed at how gradually and naturally the plot shifted from entirely comedic to entirely serious. The Gundam team dynamic was at times annoying, but ZZ's pacing is a thousand times better than Zeta's. Also I wanted to fuck every single female character which probably eased my watch

Attached: What's going on Azusa.jpg (600x960, 132K)

Looking at all these shitty images posted above, it really shows how bad anime used to be.

Watch Slayers last so you remember more of it and like it better in the long run.

NOTHING

I've been hunting for the Pet Shop of Horrors manga in all my local used bookstores. So far I've only been able to find volume 2, so I'm forced to use Amazon. I hate ordering used books off Amazon but the scans are so shitty I don't really have a choice.

In the meantime, I watched the OVA. It was pretty underwhelming, though the colors were nice.

Watch Lamune so you can get to the sequel.

I sing the Gundam theme to my cats. They pretend they hate it, but I know deep down they love it.

Nothing too spectacular. Galaxy Express 999 and Space Pirate Captain Harlock. I've had the theme to the former stuck in my head for a week.

God your adorable

what still needs a bd release?
what got a shit bd release or shitty upscale?

I just started watching this a few days ago. I missed out on a goddamn classic

>Demon City Shinjuku.
Just watched it. Story was mediocre. Fights were short but very pretty. 7/10.

Bump.
Check out the Vampire Hunter D movies if you haven't already. The second movie is especially gorgeous.

Yes, and from a fairly obscure video game spin-off.

Cool 3x3, here's mine

my thought as well. that said, akira's art style is quite different from everything else, so i can kinda see how it might be off-putting to some.

>Also keep in mind a lot of good stuff is untranslated in English
It really helps knowing either french, italian or spanish if you want to read titles from the 70s or earlier.

Those are some really boring shots.

>wasting trips on a bait post
unironically kys

Getting through R is a task that every Sailor Moon fan must unfortunately endure. Good luck from here on.

If you enjoy Conan, give Nadia a watch if you haven't. It's a very similar idea and was pretty good for the most part.

34 hours 70 posts. Face it, nobody gives a shit. Let it die.

Some user(s) is forcing these threads twice or more a week, of course there's not much discussion.
You can go do something else if you don't care by the way.

We've had one go past 300 post last week, so more do care.

tiger mask, this year being the 50th anniversary and all
>what got a shit bd release or shitty upscale?
the j9 trilogy: braiger, baxinger and sasuraiger

also leaving this here: a fairly comprehensive list of old anime released on blu, divided between telecines and upscales. i'm not the author, i simply added a few titles here and there

The fact that ep 1 to 13 are also shit and barely develop the story in a meaningful way, the cast is pretty poorly handled. They "ran out of time" in the last two movies because they didn't do shit with the previous episodes to begin with.

Last week I watched an old Toei short movie called Maken Liner 0011 and it was well made for the most part although the music was very unfitting. I'd recommend it to this thread, it has cyborg dogs that turn into random objects like in Cyborg 009 and it has kaiju. The 70s were a hell of a drug.
I'm probably one of the few people that finished Baxingar. Shockingly dark anime, right up there with Baldios and Hell Target as some of the darkest anime of all time.

Posts per hour doesn't matter. Quality does.

Sailor Moon R

I have been watching escaflowne with my dad. hes excited to see the movie. I hope its as good or better than the series

The movie is boring, and possibly confusing too, don't remember well enough. I liked the portrayal of depression in the main character at the beginning, but other than that it was nothing special.

really? that's disappointing. I dont know what I'll watch instead

It's only a movie so it's not like you're wasting weeks, could be worth it for completionist purposes or to just have seen it, but keep your expectations in check.

We're way too far apart on opinions to even discuss this.

The oldest anime I've watched is LoGH apparently, not counting any movies or short OVA's.

What are THE entry tier pre-90s anime that I should put on my watchlist?

Attached: 1567952959974.jpg (960x720, 122K)

Finished Nineteen 19 a couple of hours ago. The story was boring SOL first love stuff, but it was a nice excuse to insert several fancy music videos into a 40 minute OVA.

Gunbuster is 6 episodes.

Good rec but I've already watched that one, seems it came out in the same year
Are the sequels worth their salt?

Opinions differ, I felt Diebuster wasn't as good besides the ending, but some people think it's superior.

Lupin, Rose of Versailles, Ashita no Joe and Captain Harlock are pretty great shows from the 70's if you want something old.

Posting one last time about the OVA "Bobby's girl" (literal translation "Bobby's in deep") produced by MadHouse and with the character design made by Banana Fish's author Akimi Yoshida.
This is honestly worth watching even for the mind-boggling final sequence alone, by animator Morimoto Koji. (But don't watch it if you plan to see the OVA as it's spoiler-ish).

That sequence was animated by Takashi Nakamura. At least get your facts straight when shilling something.

>I'm not the OP but I made that from a bunch of obscure and untranslated ovas and movies as a joke, no idea why he posted it. Most of them are worth watching though.

>Left to right it's Birth, The Time Etranger, Radio City Fantasy, Magical Emi, Chikyuu Monogatari Telepath 500, MAPS, Umi no Yami, Tsuki no Kami, Prefectural Earth Defense Force, and one of the Minky Momo ovas, Ronde in My Dream I think.

According to what I've found it's a split work.
style.fm/as/01_talk/morimoto02.shtml

>小黒 じゃあ、もうひとつ。『ボビーに首ったけ』はどこをやられているんですか(注7)。
>森本 あれはね、たかしさんと半分半分なんだ。
>小黒 えっ?
>森本 白黒の鉛筆画のバイクシーンがあるじゃない?
>小黒 はいはい。あそこは、なかむらさんと森本さんなんですか。
>森本 前半と後半に分けたんだけど、どっちがどっちをやったのか、ちょっと思い出せないなあ。

While other sites mention only Morimoto.

>While other sites mention only Morimoto.
You literally pulled that link off Sakugabooru, which lists Nakamura exclusively. They also asked Morimoto at some convention and he said it was animated by Nakamura as well. The only relevant wiki lists it as a split work. There isn't a single site listing it as exclusively animated by Morimoto, stop lying.
w.atwiki.jp/sakuga/?cmd=word&word=なかむらたかし&type=&pageid=215
>エンピツ画でのバイク疾走、背動が延々続くシーン。森本晃司氏と共同で担当。(WEBアニメスタイル アニメの作画を語ろう 森本晃司より)

You've got the wrong idea, stop being so aggressive because no one lied or tried to lie here pal.
I did a search on Google and that was the first site that appeared believe me or not. I rarely visit Sakuga booru.
Both the quotes we posted confirm it's a joint work, probably Morimoto worked on the pencil part only which is the one I referred to when I previously suggested the reason why the OVA is worth watching for.
