He grows as a person, and is already quite mature in his thinking, being flustered by Mamako's antics aside. Isn't this the heroic arc? It is good. He's not a useless butt monkey even, he's figured out his role, strength's and weaknesses, and everyone else's, and uses that knowledge to properly guide the team, which is what a leader is supposed to do.
If these people are so buttmad because of being conditioned by more modern isekai, how would they feel with older, real feel isekai like Muv-Luv? People complaining about a bait and switch here have NO idea what's out there, or what the classic literary arc of the hero is supposed to be.

Well there is a difference between seeing things from the protagonist's point of view and self-inserting, which far too many people just don't understand. Seeing things from the protagonist's point of view is pretty standard for consuming most fiction. Self-inserting is literally seeing yourself as the protagonist and getting upset whenever the protagonist shows qualities or does things that you don't/wouldn't, and taking any slight (real or perceived) against the protagonist as an insult against you personally.
In any case, yes, agreed. A hero is someone who strives to do the right thing. They may have flaws, they may occasionally fuck up and make things worse, and they might bicker with other good guys, but they try to do the right thing. Sometimes they are overpowered and just ride in and save the day, and that's honestly trickier to write well than a weaker and more flawed hero. But the point is the drive to do good.
