Just finished this show. I didn't hate it, but it made me roll my eyes a lot.

Is Violet a Mary Sue? Does a kuudere make for a boring protagonist? Why isn't there more porn of Cattleya?

Really curious to know what Yea Forums thinks of this show.

That's fucking cool!
Picked up. Thanks user.
And that's not mary sueing, is called "badassery".

didn't watch it but I'm more curious about that first frame

you're just jealous

yes op it was retarded, ignore the retards that somehow think it was cool

She is an obvious author's self-insert.
It would've been interesting to watch how a simple child soldier with PTSD and heavy injuries adapts to living in peaceful environment but she is a literal demigoddess special snowflake which ruins everything.

>It's not mary sueing, it's called "badassery".

Japan has a fascination with the whole child soldier thing. Like if you put a 10 year old girl in the army she can become a superhuman somehow in a few years, ignoring the fact any guy off the street could absolutely beat the shit out of her because she's still 4'8" and 85lbs.

I couldn't make it through this series but its a real shame they didn't just go the "Hanna" route with this and make her a genetic supersoldier. The idea of a normal 14 year old girl dodging bullets in a world where everyone uses guns completely takes me out of the immersion. The more you think about it the more stupid you realise it is.

If it wasn't for the war shanenigans the show would have been perfect. That shit with the "rebels" trying to make another war and blegh.
Stupid direction, it still made me baw with every client tho.

Attached: 723.png (614x614, 483K)

I think the detractors sperg over that scene a bit too much.

I haven't watched the show, but from what I've heard about it, the show is more focused on character interaction than it is battles. If her skill in being a soldier saves the day and fixes all the character conflicts, then she'd be a Mary Sue. But if what I heard about it is correct and the show focuses more on her relationships and struggle with being essentially a child soldier, then it wouldn't be Mary Sue, it would just be a strong character skill.
Keep that in mind when thinking if a character fits the Mary Sue stereotype. It generally only applies when a character can solve problems with little to no struggle all of the time and never needs to change to be better.

What that horrible cosplay have anything to do with this?

That is okay under rule of cool.
But Violet getting the badge in episode 4 after writing down exactly what was said, was super retarded and drop-worthy.

Because she was introduced as a "weapon", I legitimately thought she was a genetically modified super-soldier born in a lab. I was expecting a deep backstory, but nope, she's just a kuudere orphan who is really good at killing for no reason.

Honestly I'm pretty disappointed.

Attached: Violet_Evergarden_7_End_Card.jpg (800x600, 112K)

Another retarded thing is that she went from being shitty at her job to being a pro in one episode.

>Episode 4: Writes down literally what the client said
>Episode 5: Writing super-romantic letters for a princess

I feel like episode 5 is a mini-timeskip, and that she was developing her skills for several months between episodes. Otherwise, I can't explain the huge discrepancy between ep 4 and 5.

Attached: a4Qn50Z_700b.jpg (700x953, 85K)

Oh.
Good I dropped it after episode 4.

If i complement him on his cosplay, would you think he would offer to blow me on the spot?

Violet (was) exceptional at taking lives but terrible at sorting herself out.
I blame the storyboarder for rushing that scene. She should've killed a few rebels there since she wasn't all that hellbent on not killing people yet.

This is what happens when retards skip the OVA that takes place between episodes 4 and 5.

Attached: 1550706427482.png (1200x1035, 1.5M)

There's even yurishit in this pile of garbage?

>This is what happens when retards skip the OVA that takes place between episodes 4 and 5.
>write shitty plot
>oops, better create OVA to plug the plot hole

>doesn't know how kyoto animation produces anime
>can't admit he didn't know about the OVA and throws a fit instead
Kid please.

>Naruto run
ist dieser bait

>That stupid Naruto run.

Ok daily lesson on mary sueing:
What is a mary sue? Basically an IDEALIZED CHARACTER. And more traditionally and correctly an idealized self insertion of the author.
An idealized character is not necessarily "perfect" or very competent, it can be quite defective. Depending of context and moral of the story.
Being very skilled in something that character is SUPPOSED TO be very skilled is not mary sueing. A mary sue usually pop out unrelated skills out of her ass, or is natuarally very skilled at doing everything at the very first try.
A soldier trained from childhood that gone trough hellish training that would have killed her, powered up by drugs and genetic tinkering, that is actually good at doing soldier related shit is not a mary sue. If she effortlessly start doing poetry masterpieces, draw mona Lisas, play piano like a pro... at the first try. That's a tipical MS trait.
Mary sue characters are attention whores. Nobody can ignore them. Opponents and other charcters usually sense them with hope or fear depending on their side. A mary sue intervention is necessary to save the day, no one else can do it.
When she walk trough the masses she stand out like a light in the darkness, catching the eyes and the praises or envy of everyone around her.
Her desriptions are usually very flattering and give her ethereal or petic traits.
A mary sue is never "blonde" her hair are like rays of light of a quiet morning. Her eyes are not "blue" but like an unclouded sky or the sparkling waters of a tropical sea.
She is always right, her reasonings are always flawless, everyone want her counseling or hate her wisdom. She is the representation of every right moral value of the world.

tl;dr LN Violet is a Mary Sue but anime Violet isn't

Attached: 1543361300508.jpg (800x777, 178K)

Watched it all the way, although it had many ideas, it kind of just fell flat and was disappointing to me.
They were obviously trying to make something like an "artistic masterpiece" with the premise, visuals, and sound (great bombastic orchestral score) from the get-go but the characters felt one-dimensional and the story felt very shallow or non-complex at all.
>Resting on doing a "sad story per episode" format instead of trying to do something deeper/varied
>Only memorable characters are Violet and Claudia, other supporting characters are walking clichés
>Present an interesting backstory between Violet and the major in the first episode but only tackle it in the last few episodes
Looks and sounds good but the writing and direction could have been much better.

she is litteral incarnation of goddess of war Garnet Spear

It's a pandering garbage VN. What did you expect. Without Kyoanus budget and art. No one would even bother to see this shit.

what would Tanjas reaction be when Violet Evergarden demolishes her platoon singlehandedly on battlefield? Blaming Being X?

Violet attacking Tanya = friendly fire. Not happening.

The fighting or war scenes were easily the worst part and just so stupid, I guess since it's apart of her background but I had no interest in it at all, VEG anime was the letter delivering and writing and meeting the characters who lost loves ones or want to convince someone to be a loved one were the best bits, I did like this episode though where they stormed the compound.

Attached: 1544657676284.jpg (1280x720, 50K)

Its just kinda weird for the tone of the series which seems to be trying for a realistic, slightly gritty character based drama to switch gears so quickly like that. They spend a lot of time showing how awful the war is only to have a 14 year old girl drop in, dodge bullets and beat up some grown men with karate. What part of that shows me the horrors of war?

The war and political setting in VEG is actually very nicely though out. In addition, the VEG anime had a military historian consultan in charge of making everything military authentic.

Though anime could not delve much into the history of the conflict and powers and reasons involved, as war was not its focus.

The original war is conflict between industrial north and agrar south. North depends on the food imported from south, but South utilizing it as advantage raised the prices/put trade restrictions trying to keep North weak.

Having no real choice, Northern nations united and decided to invade Southern to secure their food. In addition, at east and west - two religious fanatics nations were brought in inthis conflict on differend sides (west for north and east for sourth), to capture the "holy city" of Intense in the middle of continent (pretty much Ierusalim in veg setting), so the conflict turned from simple one to religious driven too as result.

Leidenschaftlich, a Violet and Gilberts nation, is a sea port nation that was pretty much constantly invaded in past and present, so its society and nobility are military based. They used the conflict and played spy games to gain advantage in this war, playing against their "allies" as well. Violet was involved mostly in spec ops behind enemy lines and assassinations in military - rarely appearing on actual battlafield, aside from battle of Intense where all forces were called in for it.

Aside from the nations, there are also other relevant forces on continent - like the giant international corporation controlling science and mechancis (observatory in ep 6 belongs to it, so do mechanical auto memories dolls). The cult hunting demigods and supported politically by hidden forces.

And of course, supernatural. Which, in modern age almost is a myth - but one has to remember that the continent only had recently jumped through industrializaion and still has memories of superstitution.

I read somewhere that was the case in the novel, or that she had magic or some shit. I don't understand why they scrapped something that would had made the setting tolerable. The world-building was horseshit anyway, though, so there was never that much of a chance to take the story seriously.

Leon tapped Violet ass for sure?

No, I think she's still a virgin, because anime studios know that the moment a girl has any sexual experience, she is "used goods" and otaku don't give a shit about her anymore.

In the real world, though, if some soldiers found a girl who obeys any order she is given without hesitation, I don't think she'd stay a virgin for long.

>implying VEG was made for otaku
Most female characters in the show are used goods bro.

Speaking of used goods, I wonder how many miles of dick have been in Cattleya's old beat-up pussy.

The only canonical whore in the VEG is Claudia Hodgins.

>""dancer"" during wartime
>openly fucks her boss
I get that she's a spy of sorts but yeah she's a roastie.

there's time skips between each episodes, numbnuts

She isn't a Mary Sue but she is a little boring and/or bland.

The best parts of the show are her design, animation, soundtrack, supporting class. She herself is less interesting than the people she interacts with. She really shouldn't have been a dandere with the amount of emotional stories she took part in.

>inb4 "that's the point"
Okay. She's still boring.

CH Agency is a spy company that still functions as such under the facade of the auto memories dolls rental.

Claudia Hodgins was commander of Leidenschaftlich forces during main battle of Intense and is actually a cold hearted sociopathic jew, describing himself as "the trader" - his cheery behavior and socializing skills a mask.

Anime shows part of it, where they are tasked by military to send Violet to Princess in Ep 5. Claudia, Benedict and Cattelaya are the core of the agency and spy operations, while the rest are blind figures gathering intel and infiltrating influential clients.

Cattelaya is not a whore, but assassin. Claudia is a whore, sleeping around with dozens of women and always picking a needed mask to seduce and charm the target person be it male or female. He is exceptionally fake and cold, but his feelings of friendship with Gilbert and care for Violet are real (though at first he considered her a tool too)

I'm not sure whether or not to believe this is true. Seems plausible but also seems way too dark. Is this from the novel, or something?

If you were just shitposting, congratulations, 10/10 you got me good

Attached: AbsolutelyDisgusting.gif (500x281, 1.87M)

It's LN.

Holy shit that's crazy, but also pretty cool

Does Violet know / do the other dolls know? I wonder why this was omitted from the show.

Attached: ThisPleasesMe.gif (200x150, 1.87M)

The LN and anime are aimed at different audiences.

LN, but it never says anything clearly about it, just as it does not clearly states supernatural things are real - just hints and dialogue here and there so you could build your picture.

i.e. for example its still not stated how Hodgins and out of what peril saved Cattlaya and Benedict so that they became so faithful to him.

Its fact that he is sociopath and very involved with the military and made a huge carrier, then suddenly quit after war to found an CH Agency. Its fact the military still has ties to him and orders him occasionally. There are hints here and there of the real purpose of CH agency, but novel does not show any of their darker activities, aside Princess chapter where they were directly mobilized by goverment and the threaty sigment.

Also, military would not let go of an Asset like Violet go easily as very aware of her use and capabilities. In novel, to keep her free Gilbert has to continue serving in military in secret unit fighting remnants of enemies and terrorirst. In anime not sure how they explain the fact military just let the "Goddess of War" known both by soldiers and feared by enemies go - loosing both hands is not excuse, since she recieved military grade prosthetics in exchange.

>Gilbert has to continue serving in military in secret unit fighting remnants of enemies and terrorirst

So Gilbert is confirmed alive in the LN? He's in a secret unit, that's why nobody talks about him or lets Violet go see him?

As far as the LN goes Benedict sleeps around with prostitutes too.
Also Violet is possibly his long lost little sister but that'll never be confirmed.

The part where you have to report you got your ass kicked by a 14-year-old girl.

this. there's no excusing it, VEG doesn't need that trashy war orphan plot. She should have just been a dumb autist that goes around healing people. The authour clearly has no idea what they're doing with it.

>Is Violet a Mary Sue?
Yes.

Magic or science or something to explain why there isn't armies of child soldiers kicking the crap out of each other while the adults hold up inside.

I feel the opposite way.
VEG doesn't need that trashy "autist that goes around healing people" plot. She should have been a cyborg killing machine who is yandere for Gilbert. The author clearly has no idea what they're doing with it.

In their world that's considered the most honourable way to die.

Was the real journey the friends she made along the way?

The LN scene this is based on is even funnier, because she uses a giant axe instead of a gun.

I really liked it, but Violet is a little too perfect. I'm a complete sucker for this kind of emotional manipulation so I stuck around and cried the prescribed number of times, but I can totally see why some people hate it.

Haven't watched the show but for the longest time I had the wrong idea about her, I thought she was a robot. I'm not sure where I got the idea, must have saw her arm and just assumed.

The real journey should be the hot yandere sex she had with Gilbert along the way.

>Dodges your bullets by zig-zagging while doing the Naruto run
I cringed hard at this part

I prefer to keep the term "Mary Sue" to bad fanfiction characters that seem to magically make everyone in universe like them. Anything else just makes the term too expansive to really mean anything. It's not like characters can't be shit for reasons completely unrelated to being a "Mary Sue"

But what else would I call any character that I don't like?

>naruto run

gonna skip this one

This is the one Kyoani anime I havent watched yet, but Yea Forums wont shut the fuck about it so I guess I will have to bite that bait eventually.

Just don't forget the special episode between episodes 4 and 5.

It's worth watching at least for the production values and the high points in the storytelling but overall it isn't that good.
It doesn't suck as much as critical posts would indicate but even fans of the show tend describe it as flawed. Anyone saying it is the greatest thing ever is shitposting or has irredeemably bad taste.
The soundtrack was 7/10 but had some tracks I really liked.

Wait, she's not a fucking cyborg? I thought she was a cyborg, if not that's fucking retarded.

Mary Sue IS a very specific character. That's what many people don't understand. And they keep throwing this term left and right without understanding shit. In fact many people are surprised when they purposefully make a mary sue to try the various tests you can find online, and they found out the mary sue character they made on purpose is actually not a mary sue, and the proper well written character they used to take the test seriously is actually one.
Of course everyone like them for no reason: they are idealized. This mean the author assume everyone SHOULD like them, cause they are the embodiment of everything the author thinks is cool and awesome, and most importantly, rightfull. And "idealized" doesn't mean neither skilled, talented, beautifull, admired, or a combination of them all. It means the author see them as the best human being that can exist. And if the author assume that nothing can beat an ugly and stupid man, cause he see it as a subversive character made to antagonize the hipocrisy of the privileged ones, then you'll get a MS with these traits, what is called an "anti-sue".
And another important thing: Mary Sue characters are not always bad.
Yes, i'm serious. If the story and the setting require it a Mary Sue character can be welcome or even necessary. See for example "Medaka's box" it wouldn't work at all if Medaka wasn't a super Mary Sue. That's the core and the foundation of the manga.

She is android

Why not just reply "maybe" you philistine

She loses her arms and has robot arms. Technically, she's a cyborg.

It's not a spoiler, by the way, it's in episode 1.

IT'S OK BECAUSE IT'S KYOANI LOL

Attached: oEcWbj7.jpg (1280x720, 358K)

none meme aside, Yea Forums overrated Violetgarden a lot. There's a a lot of obvious bias this board have for it and you know it. It has an interesting concept when I first saw it, but the execution is quite generic and choppy to be frank.

>Naruto running in the anime
>no Naruto running in the manga
No wonder why those Vikings are staring like what the fuck

I spent a whole season waiting for her to get captured/snap out/for the war to start again but all I got was boring cliche what does love mean

Wonder Kike is fat

She is

The rest of the anime more than makes up for the brief pacing issues that occur during the war/fights. This show is one of the best anime ever made period.

he's implying that you're the cosplayer in question newbro

whats with that first frame

Anyone saying this isnt the greatest thing ever is shitposting and projecting their flaws and inability to truly comprehend and accept this masterpiece, thus feeling jaded and having need to shit on it unable to admit they are just inferior people lacking the qualities needed to see this gem for what it is.

A blind men complaining on forums that sun is overrated.

In the novel its implied she is something like the reincarnation of the world's god of war

Nobody replied the previous time I made this thread so I had to lure them in with Violet lewds.

I've tried watching twice but the misery-porn is so draining that I give up after 3 episodes.
