Man, as first impressions go, that "Superdirector" camera spins is one of my favorite introductions to a character ever.

What's to talk about? The original author took the money and ran never to actually end the story or explain anything about it it's myterieise ,Kyoani have moved on in spades especially after losing people in that fire

It happens. Anyway, it's just such a perfect introduction for Haruhi that I have trouble imagining it not being the official one, regardless of the chronological order.

I like Haruhi but I hate slice of life. Not sure how this gets you into it.

Haruhi is, in a way, a celebration of day to day life. Slice of life is a part of it. Haruhi's development is great because despite being a cunt at first she gets more and more of those scenes where she's just chilling with people (even strangers sometimes) as the series progresses.
