Yeah, I'm pretty sure a rival battle between Joey and Yugi would've made for a more fun premise for the final battle in this and would've made this battle a mark in story.
It's difficult to take such a risky route, though, so I get why they went the easy way.

Joey beat Yugi afterwards anyway.
Marik being beaten by Joey would've solved nothing.

A side character underdog beating the arc villain is not the same thing as Luke Skywalker giving up. Not all subversions are bad.

It's not like he deserved to get there in the first place.

It did shake things up a bit. Characters like that tend to get wrecked to build up the villain so the hero looks his best defeating him. Marik only won due to sheer luck.

I was surprised watching Beyblade when Kai did beat Brooklyn before Tyson did.

Didn't he essentially defeat Marik? Not sure how someone can say that wasn't impressive, a lot of the titles running now don't even let their side characters get that far.

Kaiba's autism has changed a ton of the series. Also, the Red Eyes' potential is mainly "use all the other cards and don't be such an obsessive theme player." Red Eyes was created to fuse into the Meteor Black Dragon.

Only the Egypt Arc. Everything else is horrible filler. The Egypt Arc is great stuff.
