Negima! Magister Negi Magi Vol 26

Yesterday we saw Negi close the gap but still lose to Fate.
Also it's the telling of Rakan's amazing history! (Nagi is in it too briefly)

Maybe today I won't miss a dang page.

does that little kid show up later or is he not important? ken needed a good editor to cut off most of the cast.

dumb shounen deus ex punch. or did the lifemaker just let him win so that she could posses him?

I always liked chachamarus middle school look.

Basically, the reason why Nagi went alone helping people, was to try to curb the suffering cuz the lifemaker feels infinite empathy even after a persons death. It's just he couldnt solve suffering on a global scale

Is there any other 10 year old who has gone through this much training and sacrifice as negi?

Thanks again OP, tomorrows fight is gonna be legit!

Technically he's right.

Reading it back. Theo and Rakan are dang cute.

Attached: 194628.png (516x499, 305K)

Super convenient is one way to describe it...

Super hax is probably another.

The little kid must be an immortal of some kind, he's Nagi's Master and probably pretty old. His origin is never explored but he becomes the next victim of Ialda's body hopping before Nagi. Eventually Nagi must have killed him.

>Filius
What's this guy's deal?

Ken switched from unnecessarily sexy Negi to Touta I see.

It's directly state he is, Akamatsu said so in a Q&A. He said he's 'a couple centuries' old.

you new readers are in for a treat tomorrow. you're going to see one of the best shounen battles in history.

Does that saying take into account the size of anime eyes, or...?

I'm loving these Nagi bits. He really is the complete opposite of Negi.

I'm still eternally mad we will NEVER FUCKING EVER see it animated.

that makes me mad as well. the ova stopped around the time wheb negi got dark.

It's amazing how much I'm hyped for the fight even though ive already read it

I remember a thread a year or two ago about the best shonen fights, and the first response was Negi vs Rakan with like 15 replies talking about how amazing it was. That was when I found out that Negima wasn't just a harem all the way through, so seeing that is what made me interested in this manga to begin with. Needless to say this is what I've been waiting for the whole time, so I hope it lives up to my expectations.

Will the next volume cover the entire fight or will it end before the final round?

>so I hope it lives up to my expectations.
Me too! It's been many-a year but I remember liking it.

Attached: 201718.png (281x290, 100K)

Same. I'm always hyped when I get to this part. This Manga is one of the few I always read again for fun. It's nice to see it here on Yea Forums with new people

Very progressive.
I glad to see they can get along.
The cat girl and long hared minotaur are pretty good.

Will Do! SUPER HYPE for my favorite fight of the series. Thanks OP

How much older than normal is Negi at this point, considering the amount of time he's spent in these things

DO IT

Oh, is that why this was discussed so hard last thread? You took what Yuna said LITERALLY, with no sense of friendship or humor?

It was a joke, user. Yuna was teasing them about how young (pre-pubescent) they look. But it was a joke. It would be EXTREMELY RUDE if she said that to them and was not their friend. But, she IS their friend; and it allows her to make the tease. They know she's not being literal, she's just making a joke. Yuna was not literally saying "you haven't progressed in age as a human whatsoever, you are exactly, precisely, no different in age since the very last time I saw and remember you, omg you must be agelessly immortal." She was not saying that.

"usual"
The "usual" of Yue and Nodoka is that they are
>short (childish)
>flat-chested (childish)
>friends sharing everything
>a romantic crush they're open about (not a sexual fantasy, so, "childish" for a teen audience)
Yuna is saying Yue & Nodoka, "YOU TWO - haven't aged a day." Yuna is saying they HAVEN'T GROWN UP. They are still just as childish as she remembers. No different. They never matured. That includes their secondary sex characteristics as females. They are their "usual" selves. Yuna was also characterized by her larger breasts, comparatively. IT'S WHY SHE'S MAKING THE JOKE.

That's all it is. Yuna is teasing Yue & Nodoka. She's teasing them.
>Speaking of "usual"
>You two are the same as always
>Just little girls, you haven't grown up
>Just like your tiny breasts and short height
>Although, now that I AM IN MY THIRTIES, I'm actually pretty jealous of you two. That youthful appearance is more valuable. Getting older sucks, especially as a big-breasted girl.
>And the fact you've gotten to spend your adulthood with the man you both love, doing the work you enjoy, living fulfilling lives.
>To vent my frustration, I'll tease you, like the friends we are

I dunno why but the movie exposition of Nagi past felt much less clunky forced here than the equivalent exposition of the end of Negima in UQ did.

Well, I guess I know what I'm buying this weekend

>your worship
>your worship
>You're as scary as ever, your worship
I don't like these translations. It makes Nagi sound like a COMPLETE asshole, not just an exasperated savior. He sounds like he as ZERO respect for Arika, like he saved her out of obligation alone, with no investment. It's very shallow.

But, from the fan stuff that I remember, I specifically remember this scene because he's referring to her by title (princess, not by her required adress) but more importantly
>I sure can't accuse you of being a docile princess.
You can see for exasperated as dealing with such a serious woman is to this carefree idiot, that evaporates when she's fully confident and commanding, immediately after complimenting them and recognizing them all for their invincible power. You can see Nagi was planning on continuing to simply find ways to irritate her because she irritates him, bit with that line, all that's thrown away. He needs to cater to the royal, but his expectations of catering like she's a spoiled noble is obliterated when she demands "yes, cater to me, but do it by going to war with me as close and involved as can possibly be. I'm as much the warrior as you, my tools I hold in my hand. I rely on you to win, and I plan on winning." She's rare. It's magnificent.

It's a wonderful line in the fan-translation. This official, "you're scary, you royal lady" isn't 1/10th the line that it was before.
>I sure can't accuse you of being a docile princess.

Attached: I can't call you docile.jpg (1730x1200, 920K)

But is that an accurate translation? Negima was done a long while ago and with the scan quality, I wouldn't be surprised if the translations on the fan stuff might be so/so in places. The fan TLs sometimes differ RADICALLY from the official TLs.

Case and point, look at literally every single spell translation.

Maybe half a year? I don't think it's been more than a couple months, all together.

Yes, some of the translations are different, and it sometimes even changes the meaning - like I'm pretty sure in the fan-translation, Rakan fought that thing to a standstill, not pulled it apart.
But I don't know how it's in the original Japanese.

Negi said he had used them for like 4-5 months worth, back before they came to the magical world?

I can certainly admit that the official translations are wonderful. As far as quality and standards go, they are certainly very high.

Accuracy and literalness aside, I remember that page. That single page from so many years ago, because what Arika had been saying, what she demanded, and then what Nagi comments...is brilliant. I loved it enough to remember it even now (that I reacted to it when it wasn't even close to what I have previously loved.) It's a wonderful "princess and knight" with the exception it's not "young damsel princess saved by heroic knight and following behind as support," it's "commanding and committed princess leading her heroic knight, taking control as the reason making use oh him as HER support." I'm not saying this is some sexual or attraction fantasy about "ooh, strong women please step on me" bullshit, either. In a single little scene, you get a HUGE trait expansion of Princess Arika and what Nagi's role was, and it's really, really good.

Accurate or not, that's a fantastic line that I'm disappointed isn't the same in the official version.

In many cases from my experience, accuracy is something fan-translations are better at than official ones. (But no clue about Negima yet)

While I'd bet the odds of finding someone knowledgeable in the many languages Negima uses for spells, ranging from Latin all the way to Ancient Greek, on Yea Forums is probably not too likely, finding someone who knows Nippon shouldn't be too outlandish a possibility. If anyone's got raws for the series and we've anyone fluent in Japanese here, should do some side by sides of the official translations vs fan ones and see what's more accurate for the general dialog and story.

Now that we've got clear digital scans of the official, be nice to get this sorted. The scan quality for Negima's official release is light-years better than a sizable chunk of the fan scanlations, but if it's inaccurate, then that's a real problem. There's some fairly different implications being thrown around between TLs, such as Rakan tearing apart the dragon in the official vs fighting to a stand still in the fan translations, or the post here. I doubt they'll be another good chance to get this looked at with how dead Negima's general fandom is, so now's a good a time as ever. I wanna know which scans I should rec friends and use for personal reference.

Does anyone here even have raws?

I got you covered.

1kkk.com/vol1-27914/#ipg1

Looks like all the raws can be found here. I can't navigate the website too well as it's in Japanese, but the rightmost button where the page numbers are goes to the next volume. We're not gonna get far if nobody knows someone that can TL a couple pages.

Attached: 1567913158144.png (557x339, 251K)

That's Chinese, sure those are raws? Images don't load for me and I don't want to deactivate ublock on an untrusted site.

>Good grief.
>You're as scary as ever, your worship.
Nagi just sighs more exasperation with that first line. It's commentarythat implies the woman speaking the lines he just heard (about how Ala Rubra is amazing, about saving the world, and she needs him) is being childish and not logical.
Then, with the second line, he just mocks her. The serious, not fun-like-he-is woman he just doesn't want to deal with on any level. She's just too scary that he doesn't want to bother. And rather than adress her with a title or a class, he uses a term that implies idiocy for anyone not wildly religious seriously believing the "worship" towards a woman with the precedence of ownership "your," like she's as much the childish brat royal. Nagi is insulting her.

>Well, damn.
>I sure can't accuse you of being a docile princess.
Nagi is sighing commentary, but this time it's something unfathomable: Nagi, the invincible man-of-1000-spells who won't lose to anyone and never gives up...IS GIVING UP. When it comes to Princess Arika, who just said everything perfectly and explained her motivations and their roles exactly and clearly, even the Great Nagi can't deal with it and simply resigns himself to the fate of this woman.
Then, that second line, it's not direct 1:1 insultingly describing her to her face, it's a personalized thought made public. It's realizing that this woman he just saved isn't just glorified expectation to be saved, it's that she deserves it. She was captured because she was ACTIVE. She was the cause for change and a problem for their enemies, not just some royal jewel that was valuable and owning her increases your own value. No, she was involved and she's going to remain in the middle of the fray. Not some damsel in distress, some pretty idol that sits on a pedestal; she's a commander, and she's commanding her 7 soldiers. Nagi misjudged her and now he's admitting to his wrong assumption. Nagi is praising her.

raw.senmanga.com/Mahou_Sensei_Negima

My bad. This one has chapters 324-353. It's way ahead of where we're at right now, but it should be enough for anyone able to read it to verify accuracy. I'm trying to find earlier chapters.

>Status: Ongoing
This site isn't uptodate, is it?

It's not, but we don't need the entire manga to check translations. A couple chapters should do fine though and this one has about 30.

That's irrelevant though, because there's a torrent on nyaa for all the Vol 1-38 raws with 9 seeders. Surprised to see a manga torrent for something old as Negima is, with almost double digit seeders. Search Negima's Japanese name and you can find it pretty easily.

>1 giant rar
Well, for science

Good luck user.

Attached: 1565506374018.png (250x214, 73K)

Demon mentor who died before the story started, would probably have gotten more about him and Gataeu in flashbacks if the series didn't get nuked. He used giant handsaw looking things in the great bridge part of the flashback.
She wishes, Rakan can't get over meeting her when she was a kid.
Never noticed that they basically gave away what the second plan was there.

Didn't know there was so much English in the raws, interesting

Attached: Negima_26_111.jpg (1057x1600, 519K)

That's neat.

science in progress

Super interesting:
Chamo uses 引き分ける , which can be translated as:
1. to pull apart; to separate
2. to draw; to tie (a game)

So, official went for 1 while fans went for 2.
Can't even say who's correct here, just personally I prefer 2 over 1.

Attached: Negima_26_115.jpg (1057x1600, 561K)

All this makes me want to check out the additional side series that exist for Negima as well, but I dunno. It looks like this rabbit hole goes pretty deep, and to some strange places.

Attached: 91z3TE21CnL.jpg (1500x2250, 525K)

Don't go there, it's not worth it.

science in progress for

That's interesting so far. It's a little weird cause they both imply very different things, but at least it's not technically wrong since we don't exactly have enough context to say one way or the other. You're a god for checking this stuff out though user.

Attached: 1566962427222.png (131x235, 39K)

This isn't how 30yo lady should kiss 10yo boy!

This one is a bit beyond my Japanese capabilities.
Nagi uses おっかねぇ here, which I think (but I'm not sure) comes from おっかない (scary, point for the official one since not docile seems a bit too liberal) but he's not directly addressing Arika so your worship sounds off (and it generally sounds weird, I agree with the user who brought it up) so I'll call this one a tie. Maybe someone else can pull apart this one better than me. pun intended

Attached: Negima_26_006-007.jpg (2116x1600, 1.17M)

With those 2, science is done for now

If this seems like the official translations made a simple mistake, let me give them a point or two in their defense:

Point 1: Chamo says, specifically 引き分けたことがあるらしい.
Hikiwaketa kotogaaru rashii.
hikiwaketa is the past tense form of hikiwakeru, which means to fight to a stand still or pull apart. kotogaaru is "koto ga aru", which is basically "this thing exists". rashii is "it seems." So, "it seems hikiwaketa happened".

Why is this important? Because Chamo only uses the past tense form of of the verb hikiwakeru.

Japanese verbs change their endings depending on context, and Japanese has a specific form they use when they want to indicate that something made a thing to happen, or force a thing to happen. It's called the causitive form, and to quote the Tae Kim page (guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/causepass):

"Verbs conjugated into the causative form are used to indicate an action that someone makes happen. Like Captain Picard so succinctly puts it, the causative verb means to “make it so”. This verb is usually used in the context of making somebody do something."

Why is it potentially important that Chamo DIDN'T use this verb form? Because if Jack Rakan specifically did fought the dragon to a stand still, then I think Chamo might have used that verb form, to indicate that yeah, Jack Rakan made the Dragon stop. He caused it to stop, even when it (probably) didn't want to. So since Chamo didn't say that specifically, the translators might have thought that "tear apart" was the meaning Chamo was going for.

Point 2: They did mention in one of the earlier volume notes that the dragon is a super powerful being, so strong that "even if you destroy its body. it won't actually be dead" or something. So maybe the translators figured what Chamo said was an allusion to that trait of the dragon.

Personally, though, I feel given the context, it's more likely that "fought to a sandstill" is the more accurate TL.

Thanks for doing this. If you stick around these threads and feel like doing more, I'd be very curious to see it. This kind of stuff is fascinating to learn about and see how people reach the translation they do.

Side note, looking at the Japanese digital raws, does anyone feel like the English ones look a bit 'washed out' compared to them? Or maybe desaturated is a better word. Not sure quite how to say it, but something feels off on the digital, now that I can see a side by side.

おっかない can also mean "exaggerated" or "extreme", but I feel the important point for this one is what he says before おっかねぇ, which is "あいかわらず"

Aikawarazu means "the same as ever", "just like always", or "same as usual". Like that. So Nagi is saying "Just like always, Hime-san is おっかねぇ". This shows that he's not surprised by her statement, he's not thrown off by it. Her speech here is exactly what he's come to expect from her. He wouldn't say "I can't accuse you of being a docile princess" because he already knows she isn't. Aikawarazu, she's おっかねぇ.

Further, he prefaces all this with the iconic "Yare Yare" which most people on Yea Forums should recognize as the general "Good grief" or "My, oh my~" phrase in Japanese. So when Nagi hears her entire speech, asking/telling him to be her shield and sword, he's like "Man, I see Hime-san is being as scary (or maybe dramatic would be better) as ever. Well alright! My staff and my wings are yours."

I'm pretty sure that's because the Japanese raws are tankobon scans while the official English scans are the original scanned pages from the source.

Tell me about UQ Holder, did it ever get good?

I'll be reading through the threads, but I make no promises about TLing everything. If something stands out in particular, and I have the time, I'll look at it. I'm usually around at this time, though (I'm in Japan) so it's pretty late for most readers.

That's perfectly understandable. When we get to it, if you end up having the time when it happens, I'd be really curious to see a comparison in the chants for Fate's Tearing Earth and Negi's Thousand Lightning Bolts clash. As the chants, as someone who doesn't speak Japanese, look wildly different from each other and believe were in English. Think it's one of the most notable example in the translations differing off the top of my head, like what was done here.

Er, not English. I meant Japanese. They were in Japanese compared to the usual other languages used in chants.

Well this thread blew up
I can feel the excitement

>Man, if this had been permanant, negi would have been pretty OP.
How? The problem with him isn't the lack of raw power, it's that he fares pretty badly against conceptual abilities.

Yes, they are going to kill the big bad next arc.

UQ Holder is ending?

It's a shonen. They will fight the next big bad later.

Wait, are you talking about a mid-level boss?

>a mid-level boss?
Actually yes, with the appearance of new antagonists, the hero-turn-last-boss of the prequel starts to look like one.

I kinda doubt we will get one who is above Ialda.

To be honest, i like negima better than uq holder.
The negima may have many plot hole but still a wild fun adventure.
The UQ holder try to hard to make the plot more complex that i cant even follow it, dropped uq after the tournament arc.

Negi loves his master, no qualms about being a monster.

Attached: FUCK the ''power of friendship''.jpg (1153x1730, 694K)

Ialda said that her power was a cursed given to her. It means there must be someone stronger than her doing that.

You say that, but as far as "humans" go, she's the top. Unfortunately, UQ is really about "humans." The "top" was 100% implied to be Akasah/Nobles/Shinsou (Dana) because everyone instantly tells Tota there's no way to win against them. They're super-ancient (at least 13,000 years old) and super outrageously OP unkillable immortal beings they don't even bother doing anything anymore because it's so boring.

...at least, that WAS the implication. Dan was this huge exception to even bother with mortals anymore.

Now, we have 3 Nobles all interacting with mortals all the time and none of their omnipotence is killing anyone. One is even "beaten" off-screen by Tota and Dana once had her power reversed back at her thanks to Magia Erebea that made her disappear for a few minutes, to which she claims he's finally cleared Stage 1 of her school with a heckuva lot more stages to go (at least 8 months more after he'd been there 1 week). So, it's not like UQ is being consistent anymore in the Negima Realm.

But Ken's getting old, I think he might finish this with Ialda.

Dana said multiple times Ialda is the final boss and the nobles themselves have praised her as amazing more than once. Ialda is the strongest thing in the setting, unless Ken asspulls some stronger being. Which wouldn't be too unexpected for UQ Holder, sadly.

Attached: Are you saying something bad about Fate-sama.jpg (365x316, 48K)

.

Attached: Did you just talk smack about Fate-sama.jpg (298x401, 33K)

Attached: Incineration is my game.jpg (303x405, 46K)

>Dana said multiple times Ialda is the final boss
In the context of that conversation, she meant Ialda was Eva's final boss that Touta needed to beat to solve the source of her problems and sorrows.
>he nobles themselves have praised her as amazing more than once
They praised her achievement in turning a mortal like Eva into a false shinsou, not her strength. Basically they admired her as a scientist, not a warrior.

Himura doesn't need you talking during Fate-sama's speech

Attached: stfu.jpg (670x329, 126K)

Except that's wrong. Eva herself says Ialda is the strongest thing in the whole solar system and she knows all about the nobles and Dana. All the statements and implications support Ialda being the strongest. Dana said it and Eva said it. Both are knowledgable people on the subject.

UQ Holder has many issues but downplaying Ialda is not one of them.

I 100% agree with you on that. This Negimaverse has gotta end with however they beat Ialda and stop her forceful application of Heaven. It doens't need to have more story or arcs or lore.

Nah, Ialda is strong as all-get-out, but she's not the strongest. Just the end-goal for Eva/Nagi/Negi/Tota. The top of their defined enemies (though it's getting hard to tell wtf Ba'al wants). But, just because she's the last boss of the game, it doesn't make her the strongest enemy in the game. There are always secret bosses and rare monsters that are way harder in RPGs.

Attached: This is why I hate.jpg (1153x703, 281K)

I think you're way too invested in the idea of Ialda being supreme. She's #1 when it comes to magical humans, and she's the head honcho/master of the group working towards Cosmo Entelechia...but she's not the highest layer of beings.

>There are always secret bosses and rare monsters that are way harder in RPGs.
Not always, but often enough

>Eva herself says Ialda is the strongest thing in the whole solar system and she knows all about the nobles and Dana
But the nobles' territories aren't necessarily in the solar system. Dana's castle, for example, exists in the rift of space-time.
>Dana said it
She never saide Ialda was stronger than her.

In his fight with Jack Rakan, and then NEVER USES IT AGAIN. It's seriously OP, though.

This user isn't joking. You see battle shounen fights and tournament fights and OP fights and street fights and board game fights and sport game fights and and and...

...this this next fight is nothing you have ever seen. It's quite likely the best combat manga fight ever. From structure to design to arena to dialogue to plans to twists to everything. It's just that good.

Because the contract only lasted that long

Huh. I'm almost positive I didn't misspell my own trip.

He can't use a card he doesn't have anymore.

I assumed it was you either way. Also, I guess you're right, I never noticed that one line.

Also also, I'm saging in preparation for your 5pm PST next thread.
You know what I miss about non-moot Yea Forums? "sage in all fields" doesn't work anymore

>It's quite likely the best combat manga fight ever.
It is.

Oh yes, the moment when Negi takes his first step into the big leagues.

Since it's Rakan, I'd say that's a point in 1's favour.
