What is Yea Forums's final verdict on Sword Art Online? Is it good? Is it bad? Is it mediocre?

It's bad.
The only good things are the Alicization soundtracks, and selected tracks from the first two seasons.

I used to be ambivalent at best on it, but the vitriol it drew from the cancerous "ironic" weeaboo crowd caused me to give it another chance. The early arcs are about as weak as one would expect from a web novel written by an amateur, but the later ones are actually pretty decent.

It's extremely good and has God-tier character design BUT it could've been so much fucking better, it's full of shitty story telling, asspulls and repeating the same shit too many times.

I have a soft spot for shitty newbie WN writing (See my fave anime, Re:Zero) So of course I like it.

What's so hard to remember in Alicization?

I didn't like it. It was a good anime idea wasted into a romance. But i i gotta give it credit for paving the way for some great isekais.

It suffers from light-novel-protagonist-itus but without any of the endearing parts of Zero, Ore.Imo., Sakurasou, or Eromanga-Sensei to mae up for it.

The first arc in aincard was good. The rest just became same shit different VR game.

I think the show is weak outside of the visuals of the Aincrad landscapes but I find it to be extremely entertaining. I never laughed as hard as I did watching the SAO movie with frens.

I haven't watched the movie yet because I still can't get past that part of SAO II where they already beat the final boss and there's like 3 non-action episodes left of Asuna mopping around with that dying girl.

Starts terrible, salvages itself into mediocrity that's sometimes good. More could have been done with the concept, more could have been done with the characters instead of retconning it into a generic harem despite one girl already getting glopped, and the antagonists are all absolutely bottom of the barrel. Sometimes it's best watched as an unintentional comedy.

The author has no idea how to write good villains, it's always by making them rape/attempt-rape the strong heroine or other girl characters and having Kirito/another male character save them. Literally 15 year-old edgy teen-tier writing.

I have the exact same sentiment about the Gameverse, especially with Philia too, how it expands the OCs and even more so the chars that didn't really have a spotlight in the main storyline at first(I really loved Argo even before reading progressive, exactly because of the Gameverse).
Now I'm hyped for Lycoris after being disappointed at first because I thought it wasn't going to be part of the gameverse, when they showed the PV after the final episode of Alicization. Alicization is my favorite part of the series and getting to play it is going to be so fucking good. Especially because we can save Eugeo now.

First half of the first season is good. Alicization has been good so far. Everything else is trash. The spin off is literally better than most of the main show.

Alicization is pretty decent so far, but i will never forget how much i hated the second season. Didn't even finish the GGO arc. 6/10 overall.

Alright one thing I never quite understood about SAO's plot. The game runs using thoughts right? So why is it that only Kirito is the absolute best player in this game? Surely there's literally zero learning curve since your character does what you will? I don't plan on rewatching it and it's been a while since I did, but did I miss something?

The slide from the first half of alicization and the 2nd puts the Mariana trench to shame.

Watching SAO is one big process. First you think it's not as bad as people told you, in fact it's outstanding. Then you may notice you get cucked out of any possible good fight but the setting is still good. You may clap at episode 11 or 12,the author actually took a risk. You keep watching and it ends on a decent note...
But the second you start thinking you may think it's the worst anime ever due to all the wasted potential. This is talking about the original 24 episodes. You'll wonder how this shitfest of fanservice and lack of good fights managed to get so popular when there's far better Shonen out there, and that adds to the hate. The next SAO anime are actually good but the original is the one that got it popular and it's kind of mediocre.

But then you get to where I am and realize you still had fun watching it even if it wasn't as good as you could have done it. And I mean, it was written when the author was 14.
If you still had fun and cared enough to hate its wasted potential, can't it be considered good but disappointing?

its only ok and the main character is so basic, its a good anime to watch if you are starting out with anime, but the protagonist is so basic and fucking boring that you would better of be watching cowboy bebop (godbless) and i think it is good and has earned its popularity but there are much better animes out there

I think it got most if its hate because it is overrated. SAO is generally good, it's above your average anime for sure (though that doesn't really say much), but it's far from being a masterpiece and it has several flaws, which for some people may be enough to drop this series.

I think the author is trying his best to remedy his flaws at each new arc. Kirito becomes less of a Mary Sue, in Alicization he gets out of the harem trope with a story focused on his bromance, but ironically I find that despite all of its flaws, amateurish writing and cheesy situations, the first ayncrad arc was the one that hooked me the most, the story kinda lost its charm after that.
