If you actually knew something about modern sumo, you'd know nowadays most of the top level wrestlers are actually Mongolian. They give them Japanese names and they are respected as champions if they do well, but as a national sport it doesn't have the same kind of uncontested prestige that it had 30 years ago (when only few foreigners were relevant on high level).

Baseball is way more popular in the mainstream, both because most of the players are truly Japanese (the national level has evolved to such a high level that foreign "sketto" aren't that necessary anymore) and because the players aren't fat half-naked dudes that get thrown into the audience.

Long running series like Ippo tend to be in a world of their own. In Ippo's case, the audience is mostly made up of the kids who buy WSM and people that have been following it for decades.

Yes it somewhat declined in popularity since the mongolians started to dominate sumo but both Hakuho and Kakuryu are close to retirement and most young wrestlers are Japanese again, also itregained some popularity once Kisenosato was promoted to Yokozuna.

They did a test and apparently Hakuho's initial charge had a power of around 700 kg, that would fucking kill an average person or severely injure him at the very least it's apparently the equivalent of failling from a 3 story building.
Sure they have fat but it's a different type of fat and actually many of the more muscular wrestler do rather poorly due to a different center of grabity and so on.Also belly thrusts are a strong weapon in sumo.

I'm not talking about the average person doing sumo, I am talking about guys like in my pic. Theyre tall and obviously strong. Pretty sure that 700kg charge power is just a fluffy number that sounds good, but other rikishi or strongmen would get similar results. Strongmen usually also look somewhat fat, but its all muscle trained to perfection. Rikishi literally lift their leg and stomp the ground for hours to no end as part of their training or they push against a wooden log. There is no way these exercises are as efficient as the training that strongmen do. Also just eating chanko nabe 5 times a week is also a traditional thing but sounds super outdated and inefficient.
I am not saying rikishi are weak, I am just saying that their training and diet is inefficient and that if tradition was to be removed from sumo they would be forced to change because the traditional rikishi would not be able to keep up with the modern crowd.
You can kinda compare that with cycling or running. Eddy Merckx is considered to be the best road racing cyclist there is and his training was simply to ride his bike as much as possible. No professional cyclist nowadays would be able to keep up with the rest if he just rode his bike all day long, they all need to do special training units and exercises to train specific parts of their bodies to get as good as possible.

Tradition is the main reason everyone watches sumo to begin with, from the clothes the wrestlers, referees and official wear, from the salt throwing purification ceremony, the yokozuna dohyo-iri, the clay and sand ring, the fact that women are not allowed on the dohyo the food and trainign methods. Sumo is a product of Edo Period japan and it's beautiful that it still exists at least in this form.
Also their trainign methods are better fit for this particular sport than simply lifting heavt shit. None of those strongmen know any armlocks, throws or pulls. Sumo trainign also consists of literally hours of sparring every day

Not that user but while most of their training focuses on stature and overall muscle usage, most of their training is them putting lots of stress on their bones and joints instead of the parts they need to train (the specific muscles). So instead of recovering and becoming stronger they mostly wear themselves out between bashos. Not saying their training has no effects, but they could build up muscle so much more efficient and healthier, they would be walking beasts based on the discipline an hours they put into log pushing and iron ball walking.

However, I feel there forces in the background trying to replace sumo wrestling with rugby.

Rugby has a lower entry barrier into the sport compared to Sumo and the potential to make more money.

This is just my gut feeling Japan is also considering a replacement for sumo just like how America knows one day, insurance companies will refuse to completely cover football players due to those yearly reports over CTE and football.
