The Ryo bits weren't added in until they introduced him as a timelooper in SRW and Rebuild.

Hideaki Anno did an interivew w/ Go Nagai talking about how Go Nagai's manga had influenced him since childhood. He literally admits the Devilman influence in NGE.

We know NGE was influenced by Devilman, as well as Ideon and Mazinger Z. I'm saying Kaworu specifically shared no similarities with Ryo until SRW/Rebuild where he was introduced as a timelooper.

Couple really narrows it down because anime typically never shows established formal relationships and/or ends the series with the confession.

Number one by far is Goku and Chichi.

Number two is Tenchi and his harem.

Number three is Simon and Nia.

Have you actually read Devilman? Ryo acts nothing like Kaworu. The timelooping is the first clear reference to him.
Given how obsessed with Nausicaa Anno is he's more likely to be based off of Selm, plus a lot of the things he says are straight up taken from things Ikuhara said to Anno.
