Soulburner was clearly supposed to be something else before their shift. He doesn't fit into the trio scheme thematically at all as he has the same alignment to AI as playmaker does.

Wrong. If they changed the premise due to some external factor (writer leaves, director changes) then they might reconstitute other characters to refit their new premises. This kind of stuff is what led to most of the main characters in GX no longer being important in the slightest, probably crow, and what I would have to guess what a lot of Arc-V was.

DSoD ruined ARC-V's pacing, turning it into a trainwreck, which in turn caused VRAINS to play it safe. They didn't learn from BBT in that you can't have a movie and an ongoing anime series both be of good quality simultaneously.

The point is he only appeared starting in S2, with his design finalised around Feb '18. Any remnants of any supposed prior purpose would've been reworked by then, since they had the whole S1 to set the new tone of Vrains. What you see is what they meant.

Had season 2 been in the real world vrains would have never felt stale. The fact that there was always untapped material (real life designs) made vrains feel slow for me since I couldn't wait to see in real world duels but now it is ending.

I think the single tracked nature of vrains' plot wasnt consciously intentional either, it's just much easier to write when everyone has less time or are simply not interested in doing the thinking work of how to appropriately bring together several threads.

Most other things about vrains' set up may be just one big knee jerk reaction to arc v but I understand why they might've thought it was necessary in the heat of the moment in their position. Since that heat was mostly on their necks

I wonder how a hypothetical antagonist-soulburner couldve played out. Yusaku early on was the most vengeful of the LI kids but he was still roughly a good guy. They never touched on the idea of someone who resents what happened to them to the point they're willing to hurt humanity just to get revenge on Sol. Specter didnt care much either but he was always a sociopath before and after the incident. Flame I guess wouldnt agree with lightning's personal resentment but sees the utility of controlling humans for safety.
Bohman would still be there but lightning would lie and say he's just a useful weapon

Without throwing the entirety of his personality out the window, I think early on in the first SB vs Revolver duel is a good starting point of how he might act against Hanoi. Brash, quick tempered and ruthless. Drawing from how he used to act prior to Flame as his voice of reason where he used to beat up whole gangs of people, he's also the kind to not back down. Basically, removing Flame as a calming presence would make villain SB work, either by Lightning rewrite or ~misunderstandings~ on who wrecked the cyberse world.

Don't know if SB would team up with Lightning though. Lightning is all about the AI masterrace+human instrumentality, so maybe he'd keep the exact plan from SB for a while, and use him as a tool to hold back Rev/PM before double crossing SB.

Characters being introduced later on in the story isn't a big deal, but the issue here is how it was executed. Soulburner felt forced. It's not the same as GX where new characters had no reason to be there in the beginning and there was a legitimate reason for them to come later (due to being in a lower grade because of age, being transfer students from different schools, etc)

It's not that they gave him that much care, they just flat out did not give a shit about most of their characters. Roboppi got a payoff from all those scenes about wanting to be smarter, did some combos, made some jokes, then got the tragic fate of regressing to "baka is a forbidden word". Compare that to the resolution of other characters stories.

I wanted the whole thing to have a point. Kaiser is a good comparison. People gave a damn about Kaiser. People went out of their way to try to snap him out of it. He dueled people who were important to him and showed how he changed. He gets a cool finish after remembering what's important, his heart stops because of the strain his style puts on him, and he makes a strong exit.
Go doesn't get any of that. Nobody cares about him, nobody goes out of their way to try to snap him out of it. At most Akira keeps Queen from killing him, but that's just a humanitarian act. He duels two completely unrelated characters before losing to bullshit, and then he heals completely and goes back to where he was before the season.

Soulburner thought of him as a hero and tried to stop him, we don't need three characters to duel to get across the point people care about him. Go also had his fanboys who stuck with him anyway. Playmaker's interactions also indicated that he didn't want Go to go down the road he went. Kaiser's exit while interesting doesn't mean much when he's brought back. Also Kaiser didn't even go as far Go did.

No doubt it was just Konami being retarded in card design and I imagine they just thought people would use it to extend a little more rather than becoming this powerhouse that can end entire duels with it's existence causing loops.
On top of this, (if I remember correctly) Shueisha had a hold on Konami to not ban the ace monster of the currently airing show but it got to the point that they just had to put him down. It's a shame too. Firewall had peak design that is unrivaled by even Darkfluid. Gumblar is close to matching it though

What ruined Arc-V was mostly Yuya. Animations were always good enough for me, most characters are remarkably well done, the story also delivered... the show would've been DM-manga or first-half 5d's level of kino if any of the other 3 counterparts to yuya was the protagonist. I admit synchro dimension felt like the unwelcome Magi arc right after the first dungeon, when they all get separated for no good reason other than stall for however many chapters. Still, I like riding duels, and it had some of the best moments in the franchise (any duel involving Shun, Reiji trapping Roget into an endless defeat circle...). It's like a filler arc but one I like a lot.
Leo was, indeed, the only other character that came near Yuya in being useless. He's underwhelming, like Bohman or something. He should have been dead all along, killed by Yuuri, who should have been the real main villain.

The only really standout moment from Shun was Satellite Falcon Cannon during Synchro. Actual top tier moments from arc v in comparison to the rest of the franchise would come from its best 2 duels in Standard, because the surrounding context matters when the show blows its load for an important duel. And Synchro arc really sucks ass as a context.

If you're going by that definition then yes, but I define useless as something the anime could do without, which makes him useless. He had no necessary influence on the plot that couldn't have been done already offscreen. The whole flashback to when the dimensions were one could've easily been replaced by Reiji finding notes in his computer and him being dead.
