I personally like that a manga has a nice male-female friendship without it being the set-up to 200 chapters of pointless 'will they, won't they. A good romance is nice, but if not done right can ruin a good thing

I do think all the power system stuff is not that interesting but still.

To be honest it might be cause the cover on manga aggregate sites is the one of Sagiri flashing a boob which might give a wrong impression if you're just randomly passing through.

I'm not sure but wasn't the official translation only available to Viz subscribers at one point, before Mangaplus was a thing? That plus the scanlations stopping might have caused it to be less discussed in the west (like with Grand Blue).

Not really a huge fan of the Blind Asaemon. He's a cool character, but him being there kinda screws over Sagiri's shtick and makes her look pretty weak.
I mean the series harps on her being really powerful, but this guy who underwent probably the same training is far stronger.

Alright I'll try not to spoil too much.
For the power system, the island that the groups are going to is a mix of Taoist and Buddhist in nature, this is a plot point. Some of the beings on the island make use of Tao, which enhances physical and spiritual abilities and make is so that anyone without Tao can barely if at all harm someone with Tao. Tao is split into natures that follow a simplified version of the ancient Chinese elemental system (pic related). A lot of the later story is influenced by Taoist traditions. Certain characters are shown to be able to use this power system and others are shown to not.
As for the Elixir, the Shogun cares more about the possibility of getting it then whether or not sending people there is a waste of lives.
