Around the time this episode aired he started fancying himself a Spielberg, he seems to have toned it down lately though

his shit's nowadays 75% poorly done "sketches", 24% of actual recapping, and 1% of any sort of criticism.

The funny thing is that way back I can remember him riffing on Family Guy's cutaway gags in one of his reviews. Ironic, he has become much worse than Family Guy.

You can't even hat him for his script, since he doesn't write him.

Seriously, Family Guy is FAR from the worst. It's decent enough as long as they limit themself to spoofing and absurdist humour and avoid actual social commentary, even if some gags still fail.

well first off he's just terrible, as a filmmaker and critic, but he's so fucking smug about it.
He's a fucking moron who thinks he's great, buys a warehouse, don't soundproof it and then uses the officies of the building to record kind of dumb.
But also it's always been known he's been a shit person, but when the Not so awesome document hit you really saw how shit he was, he enabled abusers, kept a creator he knew groomed underaged kids on the site, and just treated creators on his site like shit.
And his newest reviews are bad, like really fucking bad like said, when he reviews current movies he just uses his actors left from his failed spinoff Demo Reel to reenact scenes, which he changes just enough to get his totally wrong points across, that would be if an anime reviewer decided to hate on a show and only show reanimated parts they did themself that made the show look worse.

That’s how his reviews used to be. But now he just sounds like an angry old man that doesn’t understand the youth, making fun of modern animated movies.

Channel Awesome was revealed to be a great guide for what not to do when owning a company/brand.
The sheer incompetence displayed by anyone in charge is mind-staggering.

Back when he tried to end the critic character, he was pretty much burning bridges with other content creators. Then he started a horrible not funny artsy skit show that bombed so hard that he brought back the critic character. However he still wanted to do his dumb skits so 99% of the show became his theater troop doing shitty skits. Then him and a lot of other people with the site got me too'd, and to counter the backlash from that he went back to a more traditional style that people actually liked and cut back on the skits, sometimes not having any.

Kinda worked with the nerd, though. Probably because all the games I remember from him were actually really bad (horrible gameplay and fake diffuculty everywhere).
With most movies technical shit like that doesn't work unless you're digging the absolute bottom of the barrel, so the Nostalgia Sperg takes the most blame for the shit you mention. He also had the whole annoying screetching thing going.

Besides, the angry critic kinda fell out of style.

Nerd episodes I think are more on Mike than James. If you watch the James and Mike lets plays you'll see that Mike's personality is just the immature crude nerd moments, and I think he's the main one who writes the script anymore. The only thing that I can't really stand about James is that he does think of himself as bigger than his characters. Especially when he was working on the AVGN movie. I believe that he was meaning to end the character with that film and try to launch a directing career, but the experience I think left a bad taste in his mouth for the big screen.

You should see what Doug did, tried to kill NC off but everything he made after it was so shitty noone would watch it and he brought him back. I think the AVGN movie would have benefited from being on a smaller scale, plot heavy AVGN and Board James episodes were much better made.

Most youtubers are bad character actors. It's difficult to be angry and entertaining without being upsetting. Though you can get some interesting characters out of people trying to copy then growing into their own thing. Jontron started out copying the Nerd, even would set the camera up 3 feet from his face and make nerd reaction faces. Scott the Woz in turn based his character on early Jon who was copying the Nerd. Though at the time youtube algorithms favored lets plays, so that overtook retro reviews, and more people began to copy Pewdiepi and Markiplier.

Yeah I remember. Wasted all that money of a big warehouse and used it as an excuse to still do his shitty skit show disguised as reviews. His It chapter one review I still think is his most pretentious review yet. He uploaded it 4x, original upload, commentary upload, behind the scenes upload, and an upload of them showing it at a con so it has a laugh track. It wasn't even as good as his first IT review, and Cinema Snob even did that better. It is funny to think with how they burnt bridges with so many people that they worked with on the way out when they made that movie. It reminds me of how he video taped his last day at work before doing the critic full time. Walks into work with a loud boombox and has a shirt that says I quit. It just seems that it's the only way he knows how to end things. That and his creepy sperg brother who does nothing but ride coattails and abuse authority. Years there were rumors of him having a casting couch. There was a story I heard where Nostalgia chick pretty much only got on the site to begin with by being casting couched in. Angry Joe I guess was in love with her but was always pissed because she'd fucked everyone but only sucked his dick. Then there was that drama between Dougs brother and Lupa who was Phealous's girlfriend so he Quit when she got canned.

As for AVGN, yeah I think something smaller would have been better. James was far too ambitious and didn't seem like he was up for compromising when he had his mind set. Also didn't help that half way though filming they found the lost E.T. games which was the whole build up of the film. It's like how Jontron did a Notre Dame hunchback joke in a video that was uploaded the same day as the fire. Except that was one skit while finding the E.T. games was the whole plot of the film.

In James' case it was more about him playing a character that used profanity all the time to make fun of angry reviewers. It's kind of ironic that it started up the angry reviewer craze

No he just thought it would be funny to make a character who's life was ruined by the Jekyll and Hyde game that it drove him to drink and use profanity as it was the only way he could express himself. The character grew from there to use more swearing and he felt that he couldn't backtrack on it and had to keep going further with it and couldn't go back. Brad the Cinema Snob based his character on the film critic Ebert. I don't know if Doug had anyone famous as his inspiration.

If you can't do it naturally or at least make a character where it feels natural, its just cringe. Despite Angry Joe being considered successful, I'd never seen a video of his without cringing in how bad it is. Then when he does streams he just talks like a wigger the whole time and uses so much ghetto slang with his wigger accent that you can't understand half of what he's saying. His angry videos are so horrible and clunky, not a word sounds natural because his default is wigger.

It's also gotten more difficult to be an angry reviewer than it used to be. Not nearly as many people are watching retro game reviews as there were in 2006. A lot of people scratched their nostalgia itch and moved on, now new zoomers are coming in and they want more modern reviews of games from the 00s and current games. The issue is that the newer the game the more likely it's going to cause a copyright strike especially if you speak poorly of it. So now you have a lot of time and possibly money sunk into a video that may be worthless to you. Where a single lets play is far less investment. Jontron is starting to see this as he sinks far too much money into sets, props, and skits, and when a video is flagged he loses all that revenue, and the thousands of dollars spent to make the video.

Call me a fanboy, but in his defense, at one point there aren't that many old movies left, so you either stop reviewing movies, or gonna pick some new stuff
also, movies who cameout when he started his "carrier" can be considered "old" now
