Should I read the manga or watch the anime? I personally prefer reading manga, but I make an exception when the anime really fleshes it out.

Probably the manga, unless you plan on waiting until it finishes airing. The anime is going a bit slow and in an order that doesn't work quite as well despite it being chronological.
