There's a reason; Nishikata is an idiot, made apparent in that he keeps coming up with childish contests to begin with when he could be smashing that cute, thirsty middle-schooler. From an objective standpoint, Nagatoro has no more depth than Takagi does. They both have no good, stated reason to be romantically interested in the respective male leads (besides Takagi's that she likes Nishikata's reactions to her teasing), and are equally undeveloped as characters. It just breaks down to what flavor of the sub-genre you prefer, or other intangibles, like artwork. Or if you're not autistic in your preferences enough to blind yourself that you're reading the same shit, you enjoy both for what distinguishes them.

But that's where a problem crops up. Bad things happen, from the perspective of theme. Nagatoro lost the plot kind of early on, and what development there's been away from exploring the chemistry between senpai & kouhai has been cliched: introduction of side characters as foils to rehash the same jokes, petty jealousies cropping up over perceived threats, and so on. The president arc is threatening to transition Nagatoro to standard romcom fare, against which it must suffer by comparison to its newfound competiion. For this, Takagi is the superior work.
Actually, to think about it, Takagi may be the more developed character too, for we know more (not a lot, but more) of her personality and interests outside of the relationship dynamic.

Christmas/End of Year seems too big a timeskip for the continuity the production team is overlaying onto the story. If it ends with the Moto episode, its a series ender. Leaving it as a stand alone, mid-season tease pretty much assures that S3 is already approved, just not announced, which given sales figures is probable. In that frame of reference, older Takagi would be an easter egg for manga readers, not a cock tease.
