Genocyber
or that Something Jack anime

Violence Jack?

I used to be into this freaky shit when I was 15 and edgy as hell but looking back I don't know why I would ever enjoy gory stuff just for the sake of it being gory. I grew up and took the moe pill

yeea

Bastard!! was great. I remembering renting the dub from blockbuster as a kid and Daran Norris' voicing Dark Schneider made it 10x's better.

But do you enjoy moe for the sake of being moe? Anyway, I came back to the gore shit after a long time and I ended up liking it even more than I expected. Even when they have nothing more to offer I simply enjoy watching them.
Devilman OVA, Jack is much lower.

Because it could push beyond the boundaries of what 3DPD films could show

Look closer fag, it doesn’t even show gore.
Just a cutscene to smoke

because back then, anime MEANT something.

It's a rather shit "genre".
Yesterday I watched Wicked City, that while being a movie it's the exact same thing. Nothing but gore and softcore porn. Glad that this juvenile shit died out.

God I miss shit like Urotskudoji. The story of late 80s and 90s OVAs is often pretty miss, but the animation and atmosphere is always top notch.

It's pretty much the same as listening to metal, you're not supposed to pretend that it's the epitome of the medium. You just have fun at the expense of absurdity.

i enjoy moe because I like looking at cute girls. Although I really enjoyed the first 2 devilman OVA's from back in the day. Especially the OST it was kino. When I was talking about gory stuff I was referring to shows where gore is the selling point which is the case for the 3rd devilman OVA, genocyber and violence jack

here's your (you)

I liked it I think it had a good style and was just a fun ride overall

high production values leading to the most lavishly animated filth known to man

Is there any OVA's/ series that is really good and not just gore porn

80s/90s was the height of anime for me. Pretty much everything from that time is amazing. What about neon genesis evangelion? I saw it’s on Netflix now and I’m gonna rewatch. Haven’t seen it in years

Well, while I enjoyed these ones (even though I was laughing during the entirety of Violence Jack) I admit that they're not that good at all.

AD Police, Goldenboy, Patlabor, Area 88, 08th MS Team, Bubblegum Crisis, Cyber City Oedo 808, Armitage, Aika, Lodoss War, Wings of Honneamise, Irresponsible Captain Tylor

Cat Girl Nuku Nuku

Thanks!
Are any of them set in a historical era or have supernatural themes?

Those vibrant colors.

I think it's more due to remastering, but still, nice palette.

Giant Robo the Animation

The best ganre is mecha cause there's a real bar of skill to make it, and you can tell right from looking at a single cut if it's over the bar or WAAAAY under.
There is some really nice gory stuff from the 80s and some genuine trash that no one should watch.

Damn why does Ryo look like Char?

Once you become an adult you start enjoying it again. As a kid I loved it cause it felt edgy and taboo, as a late teen/ early 20s I hated it because I felt that I was "too mature" for it and that it was beneath me. Now that I'm moving closer to 30 and am secure in my maturity I really enjoy it again because it is just fun to watch some cool looking visceral action once in a while, and I don't have any insecurity that liking less cognitively involving media reflects poorly on me. If they do a good job stringing together a bunch of cool looking gore scenes without the script having too many notable errors to take me out of enjoying the visual presentation then I would take that over an ambitious show that tries to be high concept but looks like shit and constantly fails to deliver on the more substantial stuff it is trying for.

Wicked City was also an OVA, it is movie length but it never got a theatrical release. They actually were forced to extend it from a single 40 minute OVA to movie length really close to the end of the deadline, they did a really good job, the whole thing looks great and it stays entertaining the whole time, the color design especially always stuck with me as nailing that neo noir aesthetic perfectly.

Gosenzosama Banbanzai, Angel's Egg, and Take the X-Train are all good watches if you are down for something a bit more experimental.

If you want a pretty good historical setting one check out Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal, it's the origin story so no knowledge of the TV series is required. I didn't even know that RK was a thing when I watched the OVA back in the early 00s, as it was just released as "Samurai X" and I had no issue following it.

thank you!

The Devilman OVAs were great simply because it was the closest we got to a straight adaptation of the manga, for as much as it covered.

Fucking modern studios dont animate vehicles by hand anymore. Look at how great these looks.

>misguided attempt at realism
>0 humor
>glacial pacing
>no tone shift from cartoony and comedic to raw and grotesque
>the delinquents torture rabbits
>Miki is a generic 80s Tsundere
It's nothing like the manga, just a misguided imitation without its own identity.

Got that backwards fucko.

I guess that's true, at least the second one felt better to watch
