I know it's mind-boggling how it looks like they're letting such a huge cash cow die a slow death but it's more complex than that. MAPPA was a relatively new studio back then and didn't even expect YOI to become that popular/successful so they most likely took on future TV anime projects to work on after YOI even before YOI aired so they had no choice.
I have faith that the movie WILL be worth the wait when it does come out eventually, but unfortunately I don't expect the BDs to sell as much on average (like almost 70k). I'm just worried that they won't make a direct TV anime sequel afterwards because of this, but we'll see.

MAPPA is founded by the one of the dudes who founded MADHOUSE, it isn't some unknown studio and, they don't own Yoi.

I don't know about you guys but I FUCKING hate Natsuki Hanae's voice so much. I remember thinking he had a standout voice when he was doing comic relief supporting characters back with Tari Tari for example but I can barely listen to him doing inner monologues and yelling in shounenshit anime since it just sounds really annoying.

Disc sales have been dropping over time but merchandise sales (can badges, acrylic stands, straps, pins) are still just as high as before.
